This was our first trip to Cascais and the town lived up to our expectations. The hotel has a magnificent location in the old citadel complex and we really enjoyed the ambience and the location so near to the town center.

No, your Sat Nav isn't lying, the pousada really is behind the castle walls. One of the best things about this lovely hotel is its position. You look out over the battlements to the sea when having breakfast. We didn't have one, but some rooms have the same great view with a balcony. All the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful, especially Narine who made walking into breakfast an enjoyable experience. Yes, the outdoor pool is a little walk but worth it - very peaceful array of sunbeds around the pool. There's also an indoor pool for the less adventurous. It's 5 minutes walk down the road to the centre of Cascais. We were surprised at how good the food was in the cafe opposite the entrance to the hotel. We had duck rice and clams (2 separate meals) and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Room tip: Be careful not to be given a room that has a partial view of a blank wall

Our last hotel in Portugal was a gem. I loved the fact that it was close to the beach and the marina. Also rather than having all the rooms look the same there were distinctive personal touches in the two rooms I had reserved for 2 nights and I personally enjoyed the artwork of the artists highlighted in the room and also throughout the hotel. The amenities were fabulous and helped to make our stay relaxing and memorable. The breakfast in the morning was exceptional and showcased the wonderful pastries and food Portugal has to offer. The only thing I wish there was more of was fish or seafood options for people who don't normally partake in ham, bacon and other deli meats. But overall the breakfast was delightful and the room where it was served provided a wonderful view of the beach when seated on the balcony.

This hotel is stunning. You arrive at the entrance to the Citadel and it is WOW! You enter the hotel lobby and it is WOW! Then you see the room and it is WOW again!
From the outside, the Hotel looks like a castle, but once inside it is ultra-modern, spacious, beautifully presented and spotlessly clean. The room we had (237) had a view of the courtyard but unfortunately no balcony – which was a shame. It was a great size though and all the facilities worked as expected. There was even a piece of original art-work on the wall.
The location on the edge of town, next to the Marina, was ideal for us as it was away from the hustle and bustle but close enough that it was only a few minutes’ walk into the main area. The Marina also has a number of decent restaurants that many visitors to Cascais might not even know about.
The Hotel service was exceptional throughout our stay. They even arranged for the maintenance team to help mend our suitcase which was damaged in transit.
The breakfast is served on the terrace so we were able to look out over the beautiful Cascais Marina each morning – perfect. Breakfast itself was varied and tasty and there was plenty to go round. Just watch for the waitress who snatches your plate whilst you are still eating.
Lunches were also great but the standard of the hotel is reflected in the price of meals and drinks.
There is a reality check though. The unique setting of the Hotel does mean that it can be sprawling. Finding the outside pool area was a challenge on day 1 but well worth it as the pool was super–clean if a little ‘cold’. There are several other areas to sit and sunbathe so it never felt ‘busy’. The hotel has a business bias so you get the odd mix of suits and bathing costumes but this didn’t adversely affect us.
If we had to complain about anything, it was the lack of coffee-making facilities in the room and that there is no ‘bar’ area. Drinks can be taken in the restaurant but that is not ideal so if you want a night-cap, try Pearl Bar in the Marina.
We would definitely stay here again.
