“To chill or not to chill!!”
Reviewed 30 June 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Just what we wanted - to chill out for a week or so in an area we have previously visited many times.
After an early start, a good flight, we picked up the hire car and in no time we were outside the gates to the Lodge. Wow!! what an impressive entrance and a very friendly welcome from Gillian and Bruce. It was immediately obvious that this was going to be a great place to stay. The villa was clean and well presented with two good bedrooms, loads of wardrobe space, very comfortable bed, beautifully dressed (even fresh pretty flowers on our pillows!) and a good-sized clean bathroom with a shower. The well-equipped kitchen had every thing we needed (except - and this is a VERY minor point - perhaps a salad spinner before we come again?). The dining and sitting areas, both indoors and out, were just right and the beautiful garden has a secluded patio where we spent much of our time - and of course the luxury of the well-maintained HEATED swimming pool, which we could use whenever we wanted - the owners won't use the pool if guests are using it.
Truffle, Flute and Bobby, the owners very gentle, friendly dogs visited us most days, but we stuck to the rules and didn't feed them.
The many local beaches are great and very clean, and most had at least basic facilities.
Our hosts - Gillian and Bruce - were there if we needed anything and without them we would have missed some super restaurants, all of which served excellent local food at very reasonable prices, within a short drive from the Lodge.
All in all we had a wonderfully relaxing holiday and hope to be back again some time!

“Misleading Advertising”

The pool is located in the owners garden very close to their patio area. The owners make it clear on arrival, and it is also written in the villa book, that they do not want you sitting by the pool. We were told this was so they and us could have our own privacy, however, when we used the pool we didn't have any privacy as the pool is so close to their patio area. This made a holiday with children that would normally play in the pool for a considerable length of time very difficult as we were not able to monitor their safety sitting comfortably by the pool as you would normally expect. We felt that this should be made clear in the advertising and felt the photos misrepresent what is on offer as the angle the pool is photographed at does not show how close the pool is to the owners house nor is it made clear on the website that you are not able to sunbathe by the pool. There wasn't any areas the children could play in. The garden with the swing seat in is covered in dog faeces from their 3 dogs. The temperature of the shower was very temperamental and the shower didn't drain away properly which turned out to be due to a blockage in the soil pipe. The villa was small but clean in the places that are important however the wardrobe floors were very dusty and clothes were covered in dust if the touched the floor. According to the villa handbook there should of been a mid stay clean but this didn't happen although we were provided with clean bedding for us to change the beds. The villa is in a nice part of the Algarve centrally located although we prefer to be closer to Gale beach. We have visited the Algarve and stayed in many villas over the years and definitely would not recommend staying here unless all you want is a base and don't want to use the pool. We felt a bit of an inconvenience to the owners who expected to continue to use their patio and pool during our stay. The advertised wi-fi was practically non existent unless you stood on one leg leaning out of the kitchen window. When we booked the villa we added on a few additional days to our stay which the owner told us we could pay directly to them on arrival. They were keen to relieve us of this money as quickly as possible in spite of the grievances we expressed to them as outlined above. They did give us the option of finding another villa and refunding our money which we didn't want to waste our valuable holiday time doing so we spent most of our time away from the villa making using of the sea and pools available in the area.

Don't know why I am wasting my time replying, but I think perhaps offering you a full refund after two days may say it all.
No - not misleading - more misread, shared pool 28º to 30º free of charge with access at any time, but to sunbathe 15 steps away on your own private fabulous seaview terrace, right in front of your spotlessly clean villa. (on arrival)!
Well as you have been rude, I have to say you left our spotlessly clean villa, not in a good way, but we didn't expect otherwise, so wish we'd insisted you accept the full refund. This is a first negative report we have received, after 25 x 5 star Trip Advisor reports. but can't see you enjoying yourself anywhere.
We so wish you had picked a villa at Gale to terrorise.

“Top of 'Best Holiday' list”
Reviewed 21 May 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Lodge Casa Massai Mara sits at the top of my 'best holidays' list. The location, accommodation, superb facilities and warm welcome from the hosts, Gillian and Bruce Craigie, provided us with a truly unforgettable week's holiday. In addition Portugal's weather provided the icing on the cake. Lodge MM will no doubt feature prominent in our 2016 holiday plans.

“Wonderful location and well equipped villa”

The quick review - we had a great time and would definitely return to this property.

After spending years saying that we don't do beach holidays this was our second one in a year. Whilst we loved Majorca for the big scenery and a great villa, we found the beaches disappointing. Within a day of arriving in Caramujeira we were already talking about the possibility of coming back. As long as you have a car then The Lodge M.M. is in a great spot, 45 minutes drive from Faro Airport (we used Luzcar). Numerous beaches, restaurants and villages are within a few minutes drive (plus good sized supermarkets with fresh fish - we used Intermarche in Porches). A couple of restaurants and the beaches at Marinha and Albandeira are feasibly walkable but the lanes can be narrow and there are no pavements (it would also be very hot).

The lodge itself is a good size with two bedrooms with plenty of storage space and a safe. The bathroom has a good shower with rainfall, jet and handheld options (there's no bath if that is important to you). There's a kitchen/lounge/diner area that should suit most families. We only really used the well equipped kitchen as we spent most of our time out on the patio where there were four good loungers and a large triangular picnic table. This gave views over the landscaped garden and the sea was usually visible in the distance unless it was hazy. In the evening a couple of small lizards clung ornament like to the wall, patiently waiting for unsuspecting insects to fly close by. We made good use of the gas fired BBQ (easier to light manually) to cook meat dishes and ate fish at various restaurants (O Algar and O Litoral in Benagil being our favourites). The pool is a decent 10 by 5 metres and our 6 year old appreciated the different depths as it meant that he could use part of it without buoyancy aids. As it's heated a cover is put on from the early evening. This threw us at the start as our Majorca villa had an unheated pool and we used it for late evening dips. It tended to cool down in the evenings anyway so we didn't miss it.

We really appreciated the provision of items for the pool and beach that we might have otherwise bought or rented. There were a couple of beach mats and chairs as well as a portable parasol (10 euros to rent at Marinha). There were also a couple of body boards and a ball. Beach wise we visited Marinha, Carvalho (our favourites), Benagil, Albandeira, Carvoeiro and Molhe (our son's favourite). Carvoeiro is the only one we didn't like as the entire shoreline was heavily covered in seaweed which smelt badly. Most of the beaches become much smaller with the incoming tide and Marinha in particular has waves which occasionally catch people out with where they have left their towels. The drop offs can be quite steep which is why our son loved Molhe. As it's so small it's not as easy to find as some of the other beaches - follow the signs for Caneiros but instead of taking the final left keep following the main road and look out for another left turning a few hundred metres later. To the right of the harbour wall there is a small beach with very calm water where you will need to go a few metres out just to get to knee or waist height. There's also a bar / cafe which stayed open into October when a lot of other places closed on the last day of September. The left of the harbour wall also has a small beach with completely different conditions and we got to watch surfers and body boarders in action. The water was again quite shallow so we were also able to have a go.

Gill and Bruce were lovely hosts who were readily available to answer any questions. Truffles and Flute are two of the most docile dogs we've ever met (unless 'pool guy' knocks at the door) and you may have to try hard to follow the no feeding rule. It won't stop them from hoovering up any crumbs that you drop and they'll happily accept a tummy rub instead of food.

Fingers crossed we'll be back at some point.

OMWord this must have taken a lot of time to write, but many many thanks for taking the time. Much appreciated. Sure you understood the cover has to go on when the sun goes to bed, otherwise it would lose lots of heat, and bet you agree it is much nicer to have a heated pool than a freezing one !! I hate cold pools, we don't charge for the heating, as I feel it is heated for my occasional use and therefore would be unfair to charge our guests !! Hope to see you again, as yes there is so much to explore on the Algarve, we still haven't seen half of it yet !!!

“Beautiful & Relaxing”
Reviewed 8 September 2014 for a stay in July 2014

Our first trip to MM Lodge. With time away from work in short supply, our stay at MM lodge was perfect. The Lodge is situated in private gardens which are absolutely beautiful and instantly relaxing! The owners Bruce and Gill are extremely helpful, it was great knowing that they were on hand should we have any questions about the area. The location is handy to lots of beaches, shops etc. This is great as we have two kids (7rys and 9yrs) We will be back and would recommend MM Lodge.
