We arrived at this hotel after a couple of hectic days in Lisbon and it was an absolute delight. After rushing around a city for the first few days of our holiday, I switched off and relaxed the moment we arrived here. The building is simply beautiful; wonderfully restored with every modern luxury whilst still bursting with history. The staff were fantastic! They were so friendly and helpful and helped to create a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. We were only staying for one night so my plan was to head for the pool with my book and order a cocktail! We had a fabulous time chilling out - there were plenty of sun beds set around the pool and the garden, and lots of shade from umbrellas and trees. We booked the "entry level" room, but it was gorgeous - spacious, with a king size bed and beautiful furnishings. I really wish we had booked two or three nights - this hotel is magical.

Room Tip: You don't need to book the more expensive rooms - the standard rooms are luxurious and spacious.

We have experienced many hotels on our travels but few manage to balance accommodation and historic atmosphere as Convento do Espinheiro. Swimming pool is large with sufficient beds and shade in garden-like setting. The pool bar serves good lunch dishes. Do not bother to dine in the city, the restaurant has an excellent menu, wine list, and service. Highly recommended!

This property is a unique combination of 'old' and new.....there's a new 'wing' of rooms connected to the 'core' old convent and its very well done.....we stayed in the new part ('design' rooms) which were excellent....large, very well appointed and each with a fantastic private balcony. There's a very nice pool area w bar, excellent breakfast buffet in the old/convent portion and service was excellent. Although its a 'countryside' setting, Evora is only a 5 min drive...great little town w some excellent restaurants and a welcome break from tourist-crowds of Lisbon. Also wine country is a short drive and some nice villages such as Monsaraz.

Room Tip: new wing...'design' rooms are all very nice

Our stay was one of the rarest experiences in this world of homogenous and sanitized travel experiences: A hotel that isn't only a former convent and architectural treasure, but that also brings personalized service, excellent cuisine and superior accommodation in one of the most scenic destinations in Europe. From the personal tour of the premises by staff members to the delicious cuisine and wines from the Alentejo region served at the restaurant, a favorite and a discovery this year. If there's anything to improve, it would be the awkward bar with its giant TV screen.

Room Tip: Best to choose a room in the charming former convent
