Stayed here for 7 days and opted to have a Standard Suite and we certainly didn't regret our choice. A lovely spacious bedroom with super king size bed and a lounge, this looked out over the garden and swimming pool. The staff were all very courteous and helpful. We used their restaurant every evening and the food was plentiful and very tasty. For a Pousada being situated in the town it was very peaceful and walking in Beja was a delight. We have stayed in a lot of Pousadas and this certainly rates very high up the list.

Room Tip: A Standard Suite if you like lots of space

Expecting a small monk's cell, we were pleased when we saw our relatively spacious room. It was well-appointed, charming, simple, immaculately clean with crisp sheets and provided us with quiet, restful nights. The window was small, as you can see from pictures, but the room didn't seem too dark. Ours looked out onto the garden and pool. Gorgeous! The bathroom was modern and beautiful.
We enjoyed relaxing by the pool where lots of shade was available if needed and friendly waiter brought drinks if ordered. Breakfast (taken indoors, or out, on the terrace near the pool) was lovely and plentiful, with hot and cold offerings, fresh fruit, bacon and eggs, yogurt, breads and pastries, freshly-squeezed orange juice, drip coffee and jugs of steamed milk.
Staff was friendly and discrete. The room price was reasonable for a place that makes you feel this pampered.
The location is great and it's an easy (slightly uphill) walk to the castle.
Parking is included in room price and is located at the back of the property, though there is one spot at the front, opposite the police station, for checking in.
By the way, seeing a police station there, we worried about noise but the location is quiet: we never heard police sirens wailing.
This was our first pousada experience but it was so good that we promise to return to Portugal for a pousada-only tour!

Room Tip: Ask for pool view

This large, old, well maintained government owned and operated building was formerly a male only convent. It has been upgraded to modern standards. It has massive "tall" halls, very thick walls and many large private areas for out of room privacy and visiting in a very quiet setting. An outdoor pool and a large wooded garden area provide plenty of opportunity for outdoor relaxation and visiting. The decor and wall hangings are from a bygone era, but appropriate for the ambiance.

We were greeted at the reception desk for one of the best check-ins ever. He was friendly, efficient, made several helpful suggestions for enjoying our Beja stay, and guided us to our room to ensure we were comfortably settled.

Our room was very large as was the bathroom. The room had a standing room only balcony overlooking the hotel's front courtyard/entrance. The TV had numerous English speaking channels all though we never found time to watch it. The mattresses were quite firm, tending to the hard side. And there was only one side chair in the room - there was plenty of room for several more. This was probably an oversight as our traveling comapanions had two. The bathroom was large and up to modern standards. A big plus was the nonslip bathtub surface to remove any fear of slipping on on a smooth soapy surface.

The breakfast buffet was very good and provided more than enough selections. We ate dinner in the restaurant one evening and found it to be very good, but few were present - only 3 tables of guests. This was puzzling as the prices weren't that bad, the food wa quite good and eating such a masssive room was impressive.

These Pousadas are the kinds of places we will seek out more often as we travel. You can live like a king and not need his income to do it.

We returned to this hotel after an 8 year gap and were mightily impressed. The location is, of course, excellent. Right in the centre of this small typical Alentajan town and with on-site parking. However what really impressed us was the glorious public areas, tastefully furnished and marble clad. Simply beautiful. We enjoyed our poolside lunch and the ample breakfast buffet. Service was excellent and very friendly. An excellent base to explore the Alentejo or to break the journey between Lisbon and the Algarve.

Room Tip: Views of the swimming pool are best.

This hotel was beautifully converted from a convent and has some breathtaking rooms and religious art... unfortunately the group that own it run a slack ship!

You may get the impression that only three people work here... The same person that runs the pool and bar will serve you dinner in the restaurant as well as other tasks and will appear to have no training in hospitality.

You will do a lot of waiting at this hotel, waiting to be seated at breakfast! Dinner! Waiting for someone to serve you an outrageously overpriced drink at the pool bar, witch seems to be the only bar! Yes.......if waiting is your thing then this is the place for you.

No food is served at the pool after 1500 although the menu states otherwise I was told they only serve food when people are here... Wild!

The waiter at dinner shook my hand after I was seated at the table... I've never seen anything like it. He then sold me a glass of local wine without telling me I had to buy the bottle... The food was not great, the starter I had was dry and lacked flavour. Cod Fish main was almost inedible, very salty and dry. A disappointing visit to the restaurant, it could be so much better!

The local area has some great some historic sites and great local cafes that are great value for money!

If you plan on returning to your room after lunch don't count on it been clean and made up...

Overall, a beautiful building but poor service, overpriced food/drinks and lacking good management... It's a hotel surviving on the wow factor of the building!

Not recommended at this time!
