It would be difficult to find a fault with this accommodation. It is convenient to the centre of Ypres only 3 mins walk. It has a little oasis of a secluded quiet walled garden very empathically designed you would never know you were in the middle of a town. Everything you would need is thoughtfully provided with beers wines, bottled water and fruit juices at very reasonable prices. The bedrooms were large and the showers were excellent with plenty of towels, and if you wanted, shower gel was also there to use. Alain was a very pleasant, hospitable and discreet host. We took advantage of his very reasonably priced tour which we thoroughly enjoyed. He is extremely knowledgeable about WW1 and the battlefields/ cemeteries and gives a poignant insight into what Ypres and surrounding areas was like. I would definitely recommend this accommodation and intend to return in the future.

This is a good base to stay when visiting Ypres. Very central and within easy walking distance of the Menin Gate. Lovely and clean with all amenities that you need.
The downside of this is the way the owner likes to 'oversee' your stay. On arrival he makes a point of telling you to never leave the keys in the inside of the front door when locked. We followed this instruction and on one evening four girls were in the house chilling out and at 10 o'clock he unlocked the door and came in but did not knock or shout out just appearing in the lounge which startled us. This was an invasion of privacy. Paying guests should be allowed that privacy.
I would not stay in this house again.

My son (age 14) and I stayed here from 7 - 10th April 2014. We didn't meet Caroline but Alain was extremely welcoming and extremely knowledgeable about WW1 history and the area ... We went to Passendale Museum (easy to get to by local bus from Ypres Railway station - was 4 Euros each way for me and my son) .. this was the best museum since it also had dugout and trenches. The Flanders Field Museum at The Cloth Hall was also good - however if you suffer from vertigo beware or paying to go up into The Belfry Tower ! The first section of snail staircase is enclosed and fine but once in the bell tower there is a tall metal staircase, snail-like but open and you can see straight down ...before another section of enclosed staircase with windows out to open (lot of wind) before roof .....Too scary for me - dreadful vertigo ! Menin Gate ceremony was excellent - you need to get there at least 45 mins before and stand at the far side of the gate (away from the main square end) by the final pillars. If you look on the ground there is a round white mark where the trumpeters stand. Nearest supermarket called GB is on the far side of the Cathedral (side of where the train station is) Opens 8.30am till 6pm. Best Waffles - sweet & no need to add extra toppings are from the Waffle & Ice cream shop (has large ice cream cone outside) opposite Flanders F Museum on the corner of the street. We came by Eurostar from London to Lille and walked to Lille Flanders station (5 - 10 min walk, well signposted) and bought a return ticket to Ypres for the two of us for 58 Euros .. was very easy .. 1 train change .. you can see the train schedules under TGV website. You can't pre-book but can just buy at the ticket office at Lille Flanders. We had a wonderful time ...

Room Tip: “We stayed in the first room on the first floor (spacious and had 3 single beds) , bathroom across the hallway clean, good shower and two sinks next to each other, plenty of towels, shampoo & shower gel plus a powerful hair drier. Room was on street side but not noisy. Kitchen well equipped, has microwave, electric hob , fridge & freezer, kettle & coffee maker. Living room has TV with lots of English channels. Also has a dining room. Home from home ...

We stayed here last year for a week (August 2012 but I've only just realised that I didn't write a review) with friends of ours and their 1 year old baby. Alain couldn't have been more helpful from the moment we arrived, going out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed for our stay. The house is lovely with a fridge stocked with beer that we consumed at very reasonable rates! It is a very quick and easy walk to the cloth market and we parked our car right outside for when we ventured further afield. We have recommended Le Chat Noir to other friends who have since stayed here twice so we are long overdue another visit. The beds are very comfortable, the shower excellent and the lounge and dining room very freindly spaces - something you miss when in a hotel or smaller guest house. We didn't stay in much as this region is full of things to do but when we did, we found the house is packed with really interesting books and fun games. There isn't a better place to stay trust me.

Room Tip: The room on the first floor is closest to the bathroom but it didn't really matter.
