I came here to see Michelangelo (Madonna and Child) - as most do - but the exquisitely simple 13th century tomb "frescoes" (or painted sepulchres as they are described in the promo blurb) in one of the side chapels distracted my eye and had me spend most of my visit consumed by their extraordinary beauty. There's no interpretation - no explanation of them - yet there is of other (less interesting) assets within the church, which is a shame. A chat with one of the (very nice) staff revealed that they were from the period described but more than that wasn't known. There's lots to excite in this church - the innovative design detail of some of the "furniture", flaking wall paintings of crumbling loveliness, and huge marble and ebony carvings that impose their majesty on the assembled throng. Then there's the Michelangelo - of course, it's a masterpiece - but you can't get up close - and that is really sad as the distance makes you feel somewhat disconnected. Thoroughly recommend a trip here - and buy the museum pass (28 Euros for three days) - it'll get you in to all other publicly-funded museums and is a real saving if you're doing the rounds.

It’s impossible to miss this imposing church when walking through Bruges. Standing at the foot, you can imagine it reaches into the Heaven.

There are many many churches in Bruges, and this might have been just another one, but for the fact that it houses Michaelangelo’s Madonna & Child. One of the few Michaelangelo’s outside Italy.

The church itself is free, but you have to pay for the museum part where the Michaelangelo sits. However, for the price of a coffee & a croissant(€4), it’s not too bad.

It is undoubted beautiful. However, if you weren’t told it was a Michaelangelo, would you know it was special? I’m guessing not, as one of the reviews below has tagged the wrong Madonna & Child statue in this church as Michaelangelo’s.

There are some other nice artworks and tombs, but be honest, you all came here for the Michaelangelo.

You MUST see this iconic statue created by Michelangelo himself. It is a must see statue that was nearly lost for all time if it was not for some heroic people during WW11 to track down the stolen art and return it. It is back home on Bruges and you HAVE to visit it. It is a real work of art.

Although there were major alterations going on it was worth going to see the statue. There were also some tombs and other architectural points of interest. Really glad we saw this.
