I stopped in with my girlfriend after dinner looking for a beer on our first night in Brussels. We walked to the bar area and it was crowded with people - but were immediately invited to sit wherever we would like by Junior. I went to order a Leffe and Junior said, "wait, you need to try something you can't get in America" and then offered me a Zinnebir. It was perfect. We drank them all night. We learned Junior was one of the owners and we sat with him and another owner, Stiv, for much of the rest of the night. It was such a pleasure to be welcomed into a space like that and to be made to feel at home so quickly - especially as Americans traveling abroad when we so often get a cold shoulder. We will definitely be back.

Visited mid Week in the Late Afternoon on a very cold day, so it was very nice to receive a warm reception, great beer and good food.
The original part of the bar is three smallish rooms with the bar in the middle room. The decades of nicotine stained walls (no smoking these days) are adorned with interesting pictures and cuttings - the most interesting being about the Brussels Surrealist Movement.

If you like real bars (opposed to a sterile plastic palace with picture menus) visit this one.

This is one of my favourite bars in Brussels and a definite one for the list for visitors to Brussels. Old, quirky, lots of interesting history and great character. Slightly off the beaten track but only by a 5-10 minute walk - worth the diversion!

Well, this (very) old - authentic Brussels-café is a must to all wanting to discover the "real ambiance" of a typical beer-tasting place.
Although it is quite famous and quoted in various travel-guides, you will find yourself immersed in a "local atmosphere" made of "Brusseleir" speaking "habitués"
Don't hesitate to ask questions, nearly all people are quite willing to engage an "impromptu" discussion about Brussels, the local stories or - of course - the merits of the various beers !
Enjoy some local food with your beer, not only is it delicious but it will avoid you to be "knocked" down after your third beer ...
My preferences : Orval, Chimay or Rochefort abbey-beers, or Duvel, Hopus or Gueuze ! ... just classics but they taste better in this environment :-)

By the way : non-Dutch speaking people will be able to pronounce the pub's Flemish name : 't Goudblommeke in Papier ... and find out there are no language barriers in Brussels !!!

ps. art-lovers : you'll find out this was the favourite place of a surprising story about René Magrittes and the Belgian surrealists !!

maybe I'll encounter you there ;-)

You are going to BXL, to enjoy all the famous sites, museums and delicious restaurants...and now, you wish for something different. Something that you make you FEEL the old Brussels. Look no more. Go to that magical little bistro, sit at a bench -like table, order a beer and...ENJOY. All is real here. The "brusselar", simple menu, the humour and kindness of the people who serve you (and take you to an historical journey, if you are interested) the unaffected style. A gem, to protect!
