Really enjoyed the great atmosphere in this small cafe near Leiden university. Coffee and sandwich were very good and the staff were very nice.

The beautiful surroundings in one of the nicest squares in Leiden make up for any shortcomings in coffee (illy)

For many years I go to this little Koffiehuisje, it's a very authentic place with friendly staff, delicious homemade cake, soup, quiche and broodjes. They serve a good coffee and in the summer you can sit at the sunny terrace with a special beer. Since it is such a small place it feels like home. In the winter they have a nice fireplace and hot chocolat. The place is so friendly that you want to stay there for hours and hours.
They serve broodjes with local and homemade products like tunasalad and cheese and eggs from a farmer in De Weipoort.

The Koffiehuisje is a small cafe of sorts in the centre of Leiden. And has what I feel is the ideal atmosphere for a place like this. The people, staff and customers alike, are very warm and friendly and most people leave after a very satisfying experience. The coffee is good, I've been told that the fresh mint tea is popular but in my opinion the hot chocolate is the best. There is also a sandwich bar at the back (open for lunch only) where there is a range of freshly made sandwiches - my personal favourite, as a vegetarian, is the mozzarella, pesto-mayonnaise, tomato one. And after a nice sandwich, try the dessert that are mostly all homemade. My personnel recommendation is the blondies (brownies but with cinnamon and no chocolate).

If you go there in winter, you are more likely than not to have a fire crackling in a corner to warm everyone up. And when the weather is better, pull up a chair on the terrace and enjoy the fresh air and (hopefully) sunshine.

Now, I have to admit I'm a bit biased in favour of the Koffiehuisje. In the three years that I lived in Leiden, this was my home away from home. So it is with a lot of authority that I can say that a visit to Leiden without a hot chocolate (or, if you prefer something else, that beverage) at the Koffiehuisje is not much of a visit.

Characteristic café in old Leiden serving wonderful coffee and tea, great apple pie, brownies, etc. Sandwich bar next door, open for lunch Mon-Sat. Nice terrace with view.
