Owner description: Museum Speelklok, the most cheerful museum in the Netherlands! During a visit to the typical Dutch Museum Speelklok, cheerful live music will surround you from centuries-old self-playing musical instruments. The history of these instruments started back in 16th century the Netherlands with the use of church carillons. Over the centuries, the general desire of people to be surrounded by music, led to the invention of all sorts of self-playing musical instruments: musical clocks, musical boxes, orchestrions (self-playing orchestras) and the traditional Dutch street organs. All of these instruments, including the famous street organ named Arabier and the so-called 8th world wonder the Violina, can be admired and heard during the lively museum tour. Thanks to the highly skilled Restoration Workshop, the collection is kept playing and this craft can be passed on from this generation to the next.

Remember the times when there where no recordings of Music? No you don't. You are way to young. Music was either passed along with musical scores and sheets and you had to play it yourself,or if you were filthy rich you could afford a musical box. A mechanical device that reproduced music on various ways often with Cards or plates that had holes corresponding to the notes. This museum is exactly about that and if you are fond of music and or interested in mechanics this is an absolute must see. Make sure you follow the musical tour otherwise you will not be able to hear these amazing instruments.

WE visited and wwere just able to join the tour where the machines were demonstrated. Hearing a 1915 dance organ play bohemian rapsody was brilliant.Automata were demonstratd and some were great to see still functioning.

This is a good place to visit, and take your kids. The collection is beautiful and extensive. For kids there's a sort of scavenger hunt, with a quiz for the bigger ones. Find all the monkeys, answer the questions, and create a song for a music box. It really is for ages 4 and up.

There are regular, free, guided tours during which they also let the instruments play. You can join or rejoin at any moment you like. Be sure to ask for the details, and join during the sections that you're most interested in.

Although the museum is full of instruments, you cannot play them yourself. A self conducted tour is therefore very limited. There are tours where the instruments are set in motion and this is worthwhile to do.

We spent a couple of hours, but could have spent longer. The guided tour was in Dutch and English, very well presented. There is an excellent shop and coffee/cake area.
It was very child friendly
