This museum is housed in a nice old building, but inside it is new and pleasant to walk around and spent two hours or so. It has a large collection of paintings, some from older painters from Haarlem, then there are the main paintings of Frans Hals and also plenty of paintings by other painters from the same period. It also has a vast collection of silverware, old pottery and old furniture.

The great thing about the museum, at least when i was there, is that it is almost empty.. at most maybe 20 people in the whole building when i was there, so you can take your time and look at ease without someone looking over your shoulder or jumping in front of you.

Afterwards I also had some pie and coffee in the cafe of the museum... also there it was quiet, i was the only one there!..

If you like the Dutch golden age and you like Frans Hals then it is well worth the travel!.

Don't miss this museum if you're in Haalem, and it's even worth the trip to Haarlem if you're in Amsterdam. Hals is one of the classic Dutch masters. The museum itself is in a lovely building, and it was quiet and uncrowded on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Take you time and enjoy!

Wanting to emmerse ourselves into the Dutch culture, we visited the Frans Hals, which is easily accessable through following the sign posts. With lockers there to store any fo your jackets, take advantage of these. Best to walk around light and not weight down as it will take a while.
If you like art, this place will take you a long while as there is so much to see and divulge, it is housed in an old hosue built for the homeless, which has a courtyard in the center.
Not much else to say, as its art work, and a dolls house (1 of two in the Netherlands, other being in Utrecht) with understandings of the art work.

If you are in Haarlem, don't miss the chance to explore this wonderful art museum. I especially enjoyed the stunning still lifes and the Dutch militia portraits. Also, don't miss the room with Sarah's doll house!

Frans Hals has a beautiful collection of paintings by the old Dutch master. Its temporary exhibitions are, almost without exception, worthwhile too. They're often used to create interesting and unusual perspectives on the days when Hals was alive and working, including links to the present. The building is is located at the heart of the beautiful city of Haarlem, which is well worth a visit as well. It's "Grote Markt" (Big Market Square) is among the best spots in The Netherlands to enjoy a cold beer on an outdoor terrace and Haarlem's city center has been voted no. 1 as a 'great place to shop' on more than one occasion. Enjoy!
