Description: Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter. Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere.

Wanted to dine at a independent local resturant whilst in Amsterdam. This place was just a few minutes walk from where I was staying.
I visited at 5:30pm on a Monday and by 6:30pm the place was full.
There is no menu, a member of staff verbally tells you what is available.
I opted for a blue cheese salad and a steak which is served with goats cheese and a strawberry sauce (this combo shouldn't work but it does!!!).
The 2 team members front of house are attentive without been in your face, and the food was delicious.
If you like a unique dining experience and quality food this place is worth a visit.
I paid €49.10 for a starter, main and 3 glasses of wine, which I think is very reasonable.

We were walking n suddenly came across this lovely place with a window with lights n looked nice so we went inside but just before we went in we saw some menu which had stuff written for lunch but we went in n had to sit at the bar as it was packed
Its a small place n looks vvv warm n cute n cozy n from I overheard its run by two sisters though not sure. We asked for the menu n our waitress said once u get the table i will tell u the menu. But who will tell the prices. Well anyways she rattled the menu n we ordered the steak which was vvv bland n my husband didn’t like it at all n infact had more French fries n my Indonesian chicken was a bony one n our waitress didn’t mention it wud not b boneless. She just said Indonesian chicken curry in coconut milk n I also expected it with some rice.
Our next table had two men n the waitress was overly sweet to them n other waiter was talking to the others. I guess we were Indian so they didn’t bother.
Well they said pay the bill at the bar n mind u they even asked for a tip before my husband cud even put his hand in the pocket.
I would not recommend this place at all coz we didn’t like the food or service. Sorry

My daughter found this place online. We had just wrapped up a walking tour and were at Dam plaza. The restaurant was only a few blocks from there and was on the way to our afternoon destinations. It is located on a quiet side street. It is not huge, so there might be times when you'd have to wait for a table. In our case (around 11:30 a.m. on a Monday), we happened to get there when they had a few empty tables. They also had a small bar area but I didn't notice if you could actually get seated there. They had interesting lighting - stacks of translucent plates on the wall.

The staff seemed to tag-team the tables. One asked about drinks and brought the water. Then another one came by to take your food order. I'm not sure if this was flexible due to what language the staff vs. customers were speaking, or if it is the general policy. I had no issue with it.

We all got various salads and two of us ordered soups. Everything tasted very fresh. The soups were on the small side, but since we didn't have a way to take leftovers with us while traveling, smaller portions are usually preferred. Everyone liked their lunches.

If I were in the area again, I'd readily return here for a meal.

We were looking for a Dutch restaurant and came across this hidden gem. We were surprised that there is no menu available. The waitress comes to tell what’s available.

The arrangement could be uncomfortable for some as no idea what the prices are and kind of put on the spot to decide what to order straight away. No time to think and embarrass to ask to repeat. I would rather they just do degustation style, small samples of each and no need to choose.

Overall, the food was surprisingly good. We had the black sausage and 3 spreads as starter and steak and duck for main. The service was attentive.
