Description: Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter. Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere.

Peter our B&B owner suggested this restaurant. His recommendation did not disappoint. This is almost one of those reviews you don't want to do because you want to return and not have to wait in line for ages to get a table, but it is so deserving.

We arrived and ended up sitting at a larger table that was shared with another 4 people. No problem and had a nice light conversation with them at beginning of meal. We ordered an appetizer platter and everything was cooked well, flavourful and tasty. We had the lamb stew and fish. Both were excellent and as is common in Europe meal served with chips and fresh salad. As we had the appetizer we didn't have room for dessert.

The portions are good and everything is very fresh, that is why there is no menu, it is based on what was purchased that day. Sisters run this restaurant and we will be back again, in September with friends.

My only comment would be to listen to all choices. We heard the first couple of choices and jumped right in....then we saw a couple of other items that we thought we might like, so be patient and listen to the whole menu. But that was our mistake not theirs.

Great funky lights out of plates and cutlery.

I have visited this restaurant twice, april 2015 and april 2012. In both cases I had great food. The restaurant is small but cozy and the service is very friendly and casual. They don’t have a set menu for you to look at but that in a way is one of their charm. Will be back, but hopefully not after three years 

My wife found this restaurant through reading reviews and was intrigued. We arrived without a reservation and had to endure a long wait for a table. The venue is small and becomes very cramped with those waiting to eat. We, the queue, the diners and the staff were all uncomfortable so they should find a better way to manage this. The menu is not fixed and we both ordered lamb steaks as the main. My wife had a delicious soup as a started. For drinks we had wine by the glass a forgettable beer, which is highly disappointing give the potential options in the city. Service was good and attentive but I think the overall formula has to be improved before the novelty of the place wears off. I found the value for money lacking but it was in line with the other venue in the city. Many places in Amsterdam have very poor service so this is a positive aspect.

What may turn others off about this place, I really enjoyed.

No reservations. We walked in and sat at the small bar. There were only two servers so obviously they were busy. No problem, be patient! We ordered a drink, and by the time that was done, we had a table. Perfect.

No menus. The waiter will list off what they can offer, so listen closely! I wanted to order everything, but we selected the pate, carpaccio for our appetizers. Both came with the most delicious, fresh baked bread. Both were out of this world.

Main course. Entrees we ordered were lamb with a mint butter and beef tenderloin. Both were not typical by any means. Cooked perfectly and just a bit of unique flavors we were initially unsure of really came together and blew us out of the water.

Desserts. I am not a sweets person. My friend ordered the apple pie. I ordered something with pear - I am crying while typing that because it deserves so much more of a description than that. Best apple pie ever. Best pear thingy ever. The pear (cake?) was less sweet which is probably why I enjoyed it so much. It was served warm (!) with a whipped sour cream type topping... I am drooling.

All said and done. We ordered a bottle of wine as well. Total was 85 Euro. WHAT. It's a crime.

The only bad thing about this place is it's all the way in Amsterdam and I can't eat there every weekend. Move to Chicago, please.

We had to wait for nearly one hour to be seated (the restaurant was full, and the staff were very friendly), but the wait did worth.

The starters were yummy and generous (cheese sauce, rolls with pomodoro, ...) and the main course was pretty good: one of the best chicken in coconut milk I've ever tried, with generous fries and salad.

One tip: if you are from a Mediterranean country, please don't ask for a wine bottle. You will pay 20-30 euros for an average wine you are very get used to.
