“Beautiful church”
Reviewed 10 February 2012

Beautiful deconsecrated church, now exhibition space & home of coronations - be sure to visit the 'Friends of Nieuwe Kerk' desk for a friendly and helpful welcome!

Beware though, the exhibition blocks a fair part of the church itself, which was quite disappointing ... especially after visiting Pieterskerk in Leiden!

I almost forgot, you have to check you bag (for free) into the cloakroom, so remember your wallet if you want to visit the shop afterwards.

“Fascinating - or not, depending on the exhibition”
Reviewed 4 February 2012

The Nieuwe Kerk is right in the middle of Amsterdam, actually on Dam Square. The building itself is a very beautiful gothic church, worth visiting on its own account. But it's mostly visited for varying temporary exhibitions. When I went in January 2012 it was an exhibition of Jewish religious artefacts, which was truly fascinating.
You can use the Amsterdam City Card here. There's quite a posh cafe in the building, which was full of 'ladies who lunch' types and was perhaps a bit snooty.

“Check the inside, beautiful exhibition on judaism (dec '11 - apr '12)”
Reviewed 29 December 2011

Beautiful church (on the inside, outside is rather standard), I had never been there before, but we went to see a special exhibition on Judaism throughout the centuries. It was beautiful, both the church and the exhibition. The church is certainly worth the visit, with beautiful details and glass paintings.

The exhibition was very special to see the Jewish history trhoughtout different centuries with a lot of old items that show it: paintings, books, knitting and so on. Worth the visit.

Next to the church / inside the church there is a restaurant / bar when you can eat and or have a coffee. Good place to go after the exhibition.

“Hmmm - needs pomp and ceremony to bring it alive”
Reviewed 16 October 2011

when I was in Amsterdam the Kerk had a fashion exhibition in it of Dutch-designed wedding dresses and i can only sum up the attractions of the Kerk by saying that more people were there for the dresses than the Church! There are, of course, things worth looking at - the lectern is impressive with its huge sounding board, the choir stand, the wooden roof, but all in all this is a large empty space that needs ceremony and ritual to bring it alive. If you are pressed for time, leave this one off your visiting list. Entrance is free with the Amsterdam City card.

“A waste of 20 euros - don't bother”
Reviewed 3 September 2011

We generally enjoy looking at old churches in the cities we visit. Occasionally you have to pay to enter, as in this case. I think it's reasonable to expect some kind of visit-value in return - which was completely absent here. Inside the church is gutted of all but the most immobile fixtures such as the organ and the choir. The whole interior was taken over for a up-it's-own-whatsit art exhibition that reminded me of an undergraduate end of year display. And that's it. Your lot. For 10 euros each. Think of the beer that would buy. Get the beer instead.
