“Good value in an expensive city”
Reviewed 9 January 2012

I found it quite difficult to get a good hotel for a reasonable price in Amsterdam and was very happy with my choice save for a few tiny quibbles.

Location
De Lairessestraat is a quiet area but within walking distance of some excellent restaurants and bars. If you want to be in the heart of Amsterdam, this may not be for you but the city is so small that it is only a twenty minute walk to the main areas. It is right beside Museumplein and the Van Gogh Museum and the Concertgebau. To get into town take the 5 tram. Buy a ticket (7euro for 24 hours) at the hotel reception. Thanks to another tripadvisor we discovered the bus 197 from Schiphol to De Lairessestraat (the stop is Museumplein). And it cost just four euro! That compares to 15 euro for one of the airport shuttle buses.

Style/Character
This is a very clean, modern and simple three star hotel. It has an eco 'face lift' that marks it out from others. There are nice touches such as a wall made entirely of plants in the reception area.

Service
The staff was the friendliest and most helpful I have come across in a long time. We encountered four members and each were excellent. We forgot to bring a european adaptor and the hotel staff obliged by lending one for free. We didn't have to pay a deposit.

Rooms
Spotlessly clean. Very comfortable beds. Our room was advertised as a double but it was a twin when we arrived. Nice touch with the decor- instead of bedside tables there were two tree trunks and the light covers were bamboo. The shower was powerful. Two minor quibbles: the lights were much, much too dim and a light sleeper would be distracted by the noises from other rooms such as doors banging.

Food/drink
There is no restaurant here but a short walk away there are a few. I recommend the Bark- a seafood eaterie with the butterfish a good choice. Also there is a wee 'brown' pub behind the concertgebau called something like Wengel (?), which was lovely and cosy. A note on breakfast. It costs 13 euro if you pay that morning and 10 euro if you pay the night before. We opted to walk and scout out other places to eat instead. Bagel and Beanz is nearby and is much cheaper.

I would stay here again.

Not a luxury hotel, but it was comfortable and staff was very helpful.
The rooms were very basic, no toiletries or tea-coffee facilities, however I found our room to be very spacious, there was at least 2.5 m between the end of the bed to the wall which is extremely spacious by European standards! It was also spotlessly clean.
The staff was very friendly, one looked for 5 mins out the back when I borrowed a kettle, another told us about a bus that we could take to the airport right outside the door that we didn't know about (instead of a bus and a tram), and generally we felt very welcome.
Location is right next to museumplein, which is good for the museums but a bit of a walk to the city. However the trams are right there and they come every two minutes so very easy to get around.
All in all, a very good value budget hotel.

Our stay at Conscious hotel got off to a bit of a rocky start since there was a mixup with our online reservation and the location at which we reserved (Vondelpark) was fully booked. So they transferred us to the Museum Square location. There, we were upgraded to a larger roo for the 2nd night of our stay, which was nice. I must say the staff at both locations were very helpful and pleasant, it's just a shame that their reservation system is a bit wonky.

As you might gather from the name, the hotel chain's theme is conscious living, being green, sustainable and all that. While I'm 110% for that mindset and I try to live my life in that manner, at the same time I'm very wary of any company using the "green" label in order to stir up business, especially if the only thing green about them is their logo. However, throughout our stay at Conscious hotel we did get various clues that they did try to foster the "green living" into many aspects of the hotel. A "conscious guide" in the room, 100% biological breakfast buffet are some examples. However it's also quite apparent that this hotel is very much like many a 3-star lodging (e.g. Hotel Ibis) in its facilities and layout. They did spice it up via wallpaper and other aesthetic choices to make it less boring and sterile than your run-of-the-mill hotel chain. Also, the location was great, walking distance to most attractions.

All in all not an unforgettable stay but not an unpleasant one either. And it's pretty good bang for your buck.

Location was good. However, this was not what I would consider a vacation hotel. Continental breakfast, but the room was very drab. No AC had to borrow a small fan. The hotel itself was not pretty. We only stayed one night as a stop over before moving on to another location.

This hotel is not top-notch luxurious but is a real find for overall package and value.

Reception Staff
Without exception the staff we interacted with were excellent. Nothing was too much trouble and very knowledgable. A real credit to the hotel. An early check-in was not a problem and our room request was met exactly. More than willing to store our bags securely from check-out to early evening.

Location
Virtually opposite the Concertgebouw and very close to the big museums. A very easy tram ride (5 or 16) to the city centre, and an easy and cheap bus transfer (197, 4 Euros) to Schiphol means that everything is within easy reach yet the hotel is in a calmer district. Probably about a 40 minute walk to the Central Station if you feel so inclined.

Room
Small, but spotless with a comfortable bed, air-con, very decent bathroom, good TV choice and free safe. Good quality bedding and towels; the toileteries provided are just soap & liquid wash. Lift to all floors.

Breakfast
Not the biggest choice in the world but excellent quality and ample quantity. Our tariff included breakfast and we certainly made use of it.

Would we stay here again when visiting Amsterdam? Certainly, without the slightest hesitation.
