“Tulip Riverside Amsterdam”
Reviewed 20 September 2012

Very strange and plain looking hotel when you approach for the first almost like a superstore frontage but very old.... But that can always be overlooked with a great hotel inside...... The staff were pleasant and helpful. Then the room OMG it was in a dreadful state with paper pealing off the walls and chunks taken out of the furniture. I could accept this as the bed linen was clean and the shower worked - really all I needed while I was working in Amsterdam. BUT, I went to bed at 10pm as I had to be up at 5am. Then the nightmare started. None of the room doors have 'soft' door closers and every room in the hotel shuts with a loud bang similar to a cannon going off! From the 10pm till around 2am the door banging was constant.. I would fall asleep during one of the rare moments peace broke out, only to be woken up by the next bang.. It was the worst ever and unfortunately, because I paid for a 'non-refundable' booking, I could not change hotels without losing my money. When I complained, the staff very politely said there was nothing they could. I told them "What about a sign outside the lift on each floor with 'Please close your room door quietly at night'"? - I only got blank stares to that suggestion. I suffered thru 4 nights of this unending torture.... Never ever again will I stay at this hotel.

Room Tip: bring a tent and sleep in the garden! Rooms on the canal side have less traffic noise.

This hotel is situated 8 km away from Amsterdam ( there is a signpost in front of it) in leafy and nice outskirts. We had a very large and comfortable room in Baroque style and the most spacious bathroom I have ever experienced. Strange, because the Netherlands are a densely populated country! The breakfast was very nice ( do not miss the fruit salad!) and you can take it in the wonderful garden at the back of the hotel with a small waterfall and a beautiful view towards the river ( or lake?) with its reeds, ducks, boats etc. –a Dutch idyll. Or you can take your breakfast inside the dining room which has a maritime décor.
Our room was facing the road but there was not much traffic especially after 10-11 p.m. as this is outside the city. So, we slept well. Still, for maximum comfort, you may ask for a room facing the garden.
Some small drawbacks: the room was somewhat hot ( maybe problems with the air-condition but I am not quite sure. True, the day was terribly hot: 26th July Thursday). Also the lamps over the beds were situated in such a position that reading was almost impossible.
In the evening we took a small walk around the hotel in the park-like surroundings. Suddenly we saw two wild rabbits. They did not look too scared —maybe because people do not chase them. It was really nice.

Been to this hotel for 3 days and don't think I will consider them again. Very far from the city centre. We had to take a 20 minute walk to the metro and took us another 25 minutes once on the train. The last train is at 11:30 and after that we have to rely on a bus to get back. The food is poor not to mention the hygine side of it. The eggs are dry as it has been sitting out in the open for god knows how long. The bacon is laying in a pool of grease and the bread was mouldy. When I complained they just took all the mouldy once out and left the rest. I was disgusted at the manager who named and shamed a guest in front of everyone because she put some cheese in a napkin to take away. The hotel has alot of potential but badly run.
