“A trip to North America”

Nordamerika Native Museum (NONAM)

We visited the museum and were really impressed by the (permanent and special) exhibitions. A few areas are interactive, and therefore interesting for kids. There is an open dining area, where people can eat the food they bring (some snacks can be purchased). Right now the exhibition is in German, but one can get a guide in English. It was interesting to learn that the museum started as a personal collection, which was then acquired by the City of Zurich. The museum offers free tours for families and workshops (please call for details). Occasionally, they have events, including performances. Overall, it was a great experience for the whole family.

NONAM is a small museum but full of fascinating exhibits and with so much heart - the people who work here obviously care about the subject matter and could not have been more helpful. As a non-German speaker, Peter went to the trouble of digging out an English translation of the guidebook which added so much to the exhibits but they are beautiful even without explanation. I've been to several Native American/First Nation museums in North America and this is the first museum I have visited that compares people and cultures from different parts of the continent (Prairie, Arctic, Northwestern etc) which was illuminating. The video montage and soundscapes from different cultural areas were particularly interesting. Well worth the trip to come here.

NONAM is one of the most original museums I've visited and certainly not something you'd expect to see in Zurich. It is dedicated to Native American and Inuit cultures and presents a wide variety of artifacts, paintings, and other cultural objects, both antique and modern. There is a separate exhibition of modern Native American art. The museum offers a lot to see and enjoy and if you have a few spare minutes, go into one of the "audio rooms" and listen to the sounds of North American wilderness as natives do. Very interesting and enlightening museum.

This is a popular museum and you can see why given how many young children are fascinated by Indians. The exhibition is lovingly done and the gift shop is nice too. But overall it's a very small place and had it not been for the temporary exhibition about Inuits our 7 year old boy would have been quite disappointed.
