The staff at the ticket office were very helpful and made sure we had the correct tickets. We went up by train and walked back down. We enjoyed most of the walk but please take care. We took a wrong turn and ended up on a very steep path through the trees. We had our waking poles with us (and good walking boots on) which were invaluable and kept us safe on our decent.

As the check-out time from my hotel was early, I still had around 4 hours to enjoy Zermatt. In the hotel I was advised to view the Alps from Sunnegga. It was a bit difficult to find, but I made it! There is one way up- with the Train and there are 2 options to go down, either with the Train again or by foot. There is a marked trail. not too steep, so if u have proper shoes and some time, u can walk down and enjoy the view. I took the easy way and bought a ticket for both ways with the train (I suggest to invest in a halb Tax card for tourists if you travel a lot in Switzerland. its 120 franks, but the discounts you get are more than worth hit sometimes) for 12 franks.
Many people go up to enjoy the view, have a drink on the big terrace. Others take the cabelcar and go to the very top, from there you can take the long strole down as i have already mentioned. The more sporty and adventurous, go up with mountain bikes and burn some rubber on the way down.....and then they go up the train again for another round.
If you travel with children, go to the Wali Welt- follow the fluffy white sheep and take a small cabelcar to a little vally with a pond with water so clear that tiny fish packs are swimming close to the shore, and are happy to tickle your toes if you sit long enough without moving.
It was actually a kids area, where they had fun with friends and family, enjoy the sund and learn how to swim.
In short, Sunnega is a great destination if you travel alone, on the way with yout family or enjoying quality time with yout bike.

Take this up to begin 5 lakes hike which is beautiful remembering you can return another way or connect as we did to Gornergat Bahn train. So you would just get a one way up. Nice views of course and the sheep with their bells were fun to see. A lovely restaurant for those not wishing to hike here too at first stop.

This expensive funicular takes you to the top of a mountain in Zermatt where there is a great view of the Matterhorn and a few manufactured lakes. Not worth the cost
