I went to this retaurant because it.was recommended by Mexicans to me! I must say that I'm glad I went!!
I had the Tacos al Pastor and they were sooooo good! The drinks are great and the personal so nice! I will be back soon!

This is a review of the Taco Party option offered at the restaurant. I have visited La Piratita three times now and the first two times the I ordered their regular plates off the menu. They were very delicious and for the most part, authentic. I would recommend this to anyone.

On our most recent visit, we ordered the "Taco Party" for our family. We began with the chips and guacamole. The chips were in a small basket and the guacamole came in a separate bowl. The ratio of chips to guacamole was off, too much dip and not enough chips. The guacamole was very tasty and the chips were clearly fried to order. The problem came when we had way too much dip left over and no chips to eat. For what it costs, 12.50 CHF, I would expect the proportions to be the other way around.

Our food took approximately 35 minutes to reach the table. Having two toddlers made the wait very challenging. Once the food arrived, it was not as I expected. One the website it shows a very authentic looking plate of tacos with lime wedges, radishes, and finely chopped onion and cilantro. A beautiful looking plate of food.

When it arrived, we got a basket of warm corn tortillas, and various stewed meats in small bowls (chicken, pork, beef, and shrimp) atop a warming plate. This was surprising, as it was not what I was expecting based on the restaurants website photos. The sides included guacamole, pico de gallo, and sour cream. Notably not present were the lime wedges and finely chopped onion and cilantro.

The pork had good flavor but was way too watery to be put into a taco, likewise with the beef, chicken and shrimp. I am guessing the food was heated from frozen, as the shrimp had a metallic flavor and the wait time for the food to arrive. Additionally, the food was not taco friendly, as it was quite watery.

We ran out of tortillas and ordered a second basket. They came out promptly and we quickly finished out dinner.

The bill came to more than we expected due to the cost of the chips and guacamole(12.50) and extra basket of tortillas (7.50/8). I do somewhat understand the higher cost of food. This is Switzerland and ingredients are somewhat more difficult to obtain and the cost of living is higher.

I would not recommend the Taco Party meal. The food was not taco friendly and did not look like the website photos. Their regular plates are very tasty and I would go back for them for dinner, just not with my family next time.

This is a review of the Taco Party. The format needs to be changed to make it more attractive and accurate to what is advertised.

Thank you for that feedback and for your recommendacion. We are happy that you like our authentic food. We have discussed the point of the chips and the guacamole. We will try to make the propertions better. Thank you for that.
The fotos on our Website shows people, what a taco is. We want now to make professional fotos of our food... but the food changes because of the possibilities to buy fresh food... so we have to do every month new pictures. But you're right. The foto you mean is a picture of "Tacos Al Pastor" but we use it for the "Taco-Party-Aktion". The radishes and the cilantro for example we only give for the tacos al pastor. Also the limes... thats traditional. For the Taco-Party is not usable but you can ask about it without problem. When we have some good pictures of the Taco-Party we will change it.
A Taco-Party has:

- Birria (pulled beef)
- Cochinita (pulled pork)
- Pollo (chicken)
- Camarones (Shrimps)
- Chorizo (Mix-Meat)
- Frijoles (Mex. Beans)
- Sourcream
- Fresh Cheese
- Salsa Bandera (Fresh Tomato, Koriander and Onion-Mix)
- Guacamole
- Fresh Mais-Softtortillas
- And two kind of hot-Sauces.

The both of the pulled meat we serve with a lot of sauce the meat was cooking in it. We make that, because without sauce, the meat gets to dry. So you have to take the meat out of the "watery" sauce, wait a little bit and then put the meat inside the tortilla.
The shrimps we buy frozen. But we cook them at the moment. The cooked shrimps are never frozen again.

We have the same opinion like you that the prices in switzerland are to high. It's not the same to give tortillas or bread. We have to buy for the tortillas a high but fair price. to produce our own tortillas it's not possible for us. The tortillas have to be every time at the freezer... and the energy in switzerland is very expensive. Bread you can buy every day fresh... and that s why its more expensive the tortillas.

Thank you again for this constructive critic. We will discuss this points to get a better product. But now i have a little "critical" question: You wrote that the firts two times the food was very good... why didn't you wrote after the first two times something at Tripadvisor? ;-)

We were really impressed by this place! They use authentic ingredients, and make good, simple food (the way Mexican food is supposed to be!)
They also seem to avoid the excessive use of cheese and mayonnaise-based sauces that a lot of Mexican restaurants in Europe seem to succumb to.

We both ordered the tacos con pollo, (chicken tacos) which are served on fresh corn tortillas, with delicious salsa verde (tomatillo salsa). These came with a serving of mexican rice, guacomole, pico de gallo, refried beans, and a radish/cucumber salad. Everything was fresh, delicious, and flavorful!

The atmosphere was also very nice - a cozy old fashioned Swiss restaurant decorated in a Mexican style.

I seriously can't recommend this place enough!

Thank you very much for your feedback. It makes us happy that you enjoyed our food and our restaurante mexicano. All vegetables, salad and fruits are every day fresh delivered. Also the meat. The chilis, and some other ingredients are imported from mexico and delivered in a dry way and vacumated. For the fresh chilis we have to go to chinese- or turkish-shops here in Basel. The tortillas are fresh from a factory here in swizerland or nederland. We're looking forward to welcome you again in La Piratita.

We order for lunch - Take away - for a party of 6. We order the "Taco Party" - also Vegetarian! The food was excellent, the service, and of course we ate until we could more because it was a LOT!!!! The guacamole with chips so fresh and delicious!! Definitively coming back again!

I have been to this restaurant 4 times now. Initially recommended by a Mexican friend. I've been on a Friday, where there is a very large and generous buffet, and live music mariachi. On a Tuesday for the Taco party, for business with a large group and with friends, so would say I have been enough times to have a balanced opinion. Whenever I have been there have always been loads of Mexican guests there, the guacamole is great, made with avocados, as it should be, and with not much else. It doesn't have any added fillers in it, as you might find in other restaurants. Before we went last night I read the reviews on tripadvisor and the negative reviews as well, and was a little outraged at some of the negative comments as they didn't match what I'd experienced in the past. The service was never snappy, but good enough, and friendly enough and also seemed interested in having us as customers. However, last night, may have been an off night. Although my experience regarding the service matches what has been described elsewhere. We arrived and were seated. We got some drinks and placed an order. The starter was good, hot stuff jalapeños with 2 dips - garlic and tomato, tasty and fresh, took 30 minutes to make it to our table. Now I know that from all the reviews I have read the managers respond that there is a long wait for food, because the food is prepared fresh. This may be so, however, this is where service and communication come in. There is nothing to stop you telling your guests - great choice, it will take about 30 minutes, and to bring some chips and salsa in the meantime (on past visits they did this automatically I seem to remember, but this time we sat there for quite a while). We ordered beef tacos - they were fine, large portions, as mentioned elsewhere, the waitress didn't mention this to us, despite stating emphatically that she does in response to other reviews, however, I knew from having been there before. And I think the prices are very reasonable for Basel. I didn't get the impression at all that the waiter remembered me. The main course food wasn't as tasty as I remembered it from the past, and the portions of salsa and guacamole seemed smaller, however the meat was very tender indeed, which was good, although a bit dry, as we ran out of drinks in the middle. The waitress did come over once to ask if everything is fine, as we were eating. Overall would say it was ok. Took the leftovers home, asked for some extra guacamole to take home, the waitress didn't comment, so I thought would be ok, and I would happily have paid extra to get some, but there wasn't any in the doggy bag when I got home. It's details like this that make you feel a welcome guest or not. When we finished our meal, we ended up moving the plates to the side ourselves as nobody came to take them, and after dinner we ran out of drinks sat there for a very long time in front of empty glasses - trying to catch the eye of the waitress, I finally ended up getting up and walking to the front asking her for a menu. I also gave the waitress the feedback that we had been trying to get her attention for ages and that we hadn't been able to. At the point that your customer has to get out of her sea and walk up to you to catch your attention when you only have 3 other tables to serve (1 with 4 people, 1 with 2 people and 1 with around 10 people) I think you'd need to realise that it's suboptimal and possibly offer an apology, sadly the waitress just said, well the other table was settling their bill. True - however, they hadn't been for the past 20 minutes. Sadly, as my friend pointed out, once I had a menu, it again took me 20 minutes to order a coffee, so apparently my feedback hadn't made any impact whatsoever. Which is a real shame. The coffee by the way is excellent. The table with 10 people on it was 50% Mexican, and we couldn't help noticing that they were attended to more lovingly then any other table in the room. There were repeated waitress visits to the table and numerous beers deposited at regular intervals. While we sat there with no drinks. Now it may have been because the table was placed immediately in front of the bar, and not because the guests were Mexican, however, hey were being given preferred treatment. We arrived at 8 and stayed till 11. It was a slow night. The service was excruciatingly slow and very demotivated. Sadly restaurant visits are about more than the food, you want the atmosphere (it's a nice place, cosy restaurant so you get that) and a friendly face that makes you feel welcome. I am tempted to go back with Mexican friends to see if that improves the service, but right now I am going to be trying out other Mexican places in Basel. After my last visits I was highly recommending this place to all my friends and acquaintances, after last night, I don't feel that this is warranted anymore. A great shame..So to summarise - sometimes very good sometimes, like last night average food, with last night terrible service.

Vielen Dank für Ihre ausführliche und konstruktive Kritik. Da sollten sich viele Kritikschreiber eine Scheibe davon abschneiden. Eine solche Kritik ermöglicht unserem Team einen Abend aus den Augen des Gastes zu betrachten.
Mit dem Essen waren Sie ja mehrheitlich zufrieden. Es ist tatsächlich so, dass wir unsere Guacamole nicht strecken. Da sind mehr Avocados drinn als anderswo, was halt auch etwas kostet. Wir werden uns in Zukunft bemühen die Portionen immer gleich gross herauszugeben. Die Köchin füllt die Guacamoleschälchen immer "Pi mal Handgelenk", was dazu führt, dass sie meistens zu viel herausgibt. Gibt sie mal korrekt heraus, dann kann der Eindruck, dass wir unsere Portionen verkleinert haben durchaus entstehen. Die Küche pflegt nicht abgepackte Portionen die immer gleichgewürzt sind zu kochen. Jeden Tag bereitet die Köchin ohne Rezeptbuch die Speisen frisch zu. Es kommt teils vor, dass sie neue Zutaten ausprobiert um die Speisen zu perfektionieren. Da kann es gut sein, dass sich der Geschmack etwas verändern kann. Was das Fleisch betrifft ist es so, dass durch die verschiedenen Grössen der Fleischstücke, kleinere Stücke etwas trockener ausfallen können. Diese Punkte werden wir versuchen zu optimieren.
Was den Service betrifft, bin ich etwas erschrocken. Für unsere Service-Frau bekommen wir eigentlich immer sehr tollen Feedback und ich kenne wenige Leute, die mit einer solchen Freude Gäste bedienen. Die Chefin und ich sind mit ihr diese Kritik mehrmals durchgegangen. Viel kann man da nicht kommentieren, ausser dass wir Ihre Kritik respektieren, ernst nehmen und wir uns vermehrt auf die "Kommunikation" und den "aufmerksamen Service" konzentrieren. Das Wichtigste dabei ist, dass Ihre Kritik bei uns allen angekommen ist.
Wir möchten uns nochmals für diese Kritik bedanken und hoffen natürlich Sie trotzdem wieder einmal bei uns begrüssen zu dürfen.
