“Wonderful memories are made here”

We stayed at the Villa recently with our three adult children and their partners for two weeks. This was to be an ultimate Tuscany holiday and the location did not disappoint.

For some reason we expected Villa Angelini to be on the outskirts of town but were pleasantly surprised to find it is in the centre of the little village and cloistered by neighbouring buildings. The front door opens onto the main street and the back opens to a private valley view of classic Tuscan beauty.

The building is huge with many large spaces that dwarfed our modest needs and at night could become a little eerie. The furnishings are dated and the TV sets all come from the 1990s but who goes to Italy to watch TV?

The back yard leading down to the pool is dotted with date, peach, orange and pear trees that produce tasty fruit. There is a big BBQ for serious outdoor cook ups and plenty of alfresco seating.

Maria is a gem and made everything such a pleasure. She greeted us on the first day and patiently explained how everything worked and showed us on a map the best places to go for wine, food and cheese. She is a real asset to the property. If you are very lucky you might get to meet her dog Galileo.

But even Maria could not make the green pool go away. The pristine pool with shimmering blue water in the photos had turned bright green with algae after some recent rain. It took four days for the owner to get technicians out to fix it which I think was too long even in high domestic holiday season. We had much of a first week without use of the pool.

All was eventually fixed and the owner gave us a huge tray of fresh produce and wine to compensate. He also replaced the old non-working TV in the main living room with a new smart TV - unfortunately he could not work out how to connect it to the internet.

We found the area around Vescovado de Murlo to be a treasure trove of sights and experiences. No need to go far. Be sure to try the hotel just up the road for its wild boar (better than it sounds), go and visit the local shops but take your best school Italian as most locals do not speak english, and make a booking for unique dining in the only cafe at the commune down the road. And the markets at Buonconvento have wonderful cheeses and fresh vegetables, I strongly recommend a hire car so you can go on endless day trips using the many slow windy roads.

Neighbours could be noisy. It seemed every night we were woken by barking dogs and many times we could hear people talking loudly out on the streets. However over time you get used to the sounds of a traditional village where they keep longer hours than we do.

Things became interesting when we were hit with a once in a lifetime storm that flooded the lower living area and knocked out the electricity for a night. You will never have enough tea candles to light this place! Next day the owners came and started mopping up the flood waters, but it took 48 hours to control and the smell was pretty musty by then. Luckily the Villa is so big we could find places to spread out that were still dry. The electricity came back on the next day and the eroded driveway gravel shovelled back into place so we could go for another of our day trips.

After all that we still rate the Villa highly. Everyone had a ball and the negatives turned into such little things with Maria on hand to wave her magic wand. She truly is a marvel.

Thanks Villa Angilini.

“Tuscan Gem”
Reviewed 12 September 2015 for a stay in September 2015

We and a group of friends have just stayed here for a week. It truly is a gem. It is extremely well located in the village of Vescavardo di Murlo. Maria, the local agent is lovely and extremely helpful. Maria was very patient on our arrival and took as much time as was needed to brief us on the features of the villa. The local area is very picturesque and quintessential Tuscan. Each of the bedrooms is spacious with its own ensuite. It does need to be noted that only two rooms have walk in showers with all others having showers over a bath. If you are interested in cooking then this is the place. The villa has a very well equipped industrial kitchen which we put to very good use. A very enjoyable week and for small groups of friends, this is an excellent option. Bravo Maria!!
