Lovely stay in beautiful Florence

Review of Hotel Cellai
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 17 Aug 2015via mobile
My wife and I stayed at the hotel Cellai for 3 nights as a base to explore beautiful Florence. The hotel had everything you needed for a short break; staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms were comfortable, breakfast was adequate and the honesty bar provided an added option to have a drink on the roof terrace or in one of the many cosy public rooms after a long day of exploring. It is conveniently located about a 5-10 min walk from the centre and far enough away to escape the crowds. We found a lovely restaurant right next to the hotel which appears to be one of the best in Florence (Tripadvisor)! Thank you also to the staff who provided a complimentary bottle of Prosecco when they realised it was my wife's birthday! We would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to friends and family.

Hotel situated in a great location to explore all Florence has to offer. Five minute walk to central train station. Rooms very elegant with excellent much needed air conditioning! Complementary afternoon tea. Roof top terrace is a nice getaway from the busy streets. Close to all sights with amazing restaurant just a few doors away....definitely worth a visit! ! Note that hotels in Florence have a city tax with current rate for this hotel €4.50pp per night which is NOT included in booking.

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon for 7 nights in Florence. We loved the cute spaces tucked away in this hotel. The rooftop garden was rarely crowded and had an "honesty bar" for you to serve yourself. We spent several evenings up there alone which was romantic, but also a great place to mingle with other guests. Our room was small which at first was disappointing and then we began to enjoy the cozy feel of it. Our room was the one place I felt amazing AC during this trip; however from talking to other guests, some rooms were warmer than ours. The breakfast room is gorgeous and there are options for everyone! The free wifi worked well for emails and uploading photos but not for watching videos which you should not be wasting your time with in Florence anyway. The staff was very friendly and helpful to offer restaurants suggestions, directions and make your trip run as smoothly as possible.

I am not a complainer but I was frankly disappointed with this hotel overall. It looks amazing when you walk through the door but if you really look around it is very tired looking. The room we were given initially was awful - tiny with a small shower room and a screen of fake ivy over the window making it dark - so no view at all. It also had air conditioning that made strange banging noises that kept me awake all night. I complained about the room the following morning and told them I had booked it as a special treat for my son's 21st Birthday. Granted they were great and changed the room immediately for a lovely room. So we then had 3 good night's sleep. The hotel has a lovely roof terrace with an honesty bar; but again, it was really not very clean. I went up there to read one afternoon and the floor was really messy so I left. They say they do free afternoon tea for guests - I expected tea and cakes but it was make your own tea (from a beautiful Urn) and a few 1 inch squares of italian cake that another family took..... and then there was nothing. Breakfasts overall were good and plentiful but they kept running out of items in busy periods and we had to ask for more croissant etc. The toaster was hopeless. The breakfast staff were lovely and friendly but their uniforms were filthy and a disgrace and one member of staff had such bad body odour that I was put off my breakfast (a thick long sleeved jacket in mid summer!) ! But our stay overall was Ok and it was well postioned for walking into central Florence (about a mile walk). Wifi was very slow.

Room tip: Ask for a quiet room with a view and good bathroom (no fake ivy over the window!).

Dear Sally,
we all are very sorry that you did not 100% fell in love with Cellai Hotel. As soon as our front desk manager knew that you prefered a different room facing she immediately moved to a room that you liked. I am sorry that you found some leaves on the terrace floor but our beautiful terrace is suffering the extraordinary heat of this extraordinary hot summer. 45° celsius are tough also for our roses, our oleandres, and the more than 200 plants. But Vincenzo the gardner is doing a great job and our plants and all the flowers will win the game !!! :).
We wish to see you in Florence again

We arrived in Florence for our first time and took a taxi from the train station to the hotel. We were warmly greeted by the front desk. We had originally booked a room with 2 single beds (I had booked online and it was a little confusing) so that was changed for us right away to a double room. Our room was very clean and well air conditioned.
The hotel is very quaint and decorated in such a lovely way - not decorator but as if someone had lovingly chosen the different pieces of art and furnishings.
The breakfast buffet was fabulous - we didn't think it would be so extensive, so that was really an added bonus.
The hotel is located very conveniently - a short walk from the main Florence attractions - which was great for us.
Only one minor point - the only noise we did hear were room doors opening and closing quite late into the night. Perhaps something can be done to quieten the doors.
