This is less of a hotel and more of B&B really although they do have a reception facility till 1am. We have booked a quad room meant for 4 people for just us 2 so cant complain on the space although I wonder what it would be like if 4 people actually stayed in the room, perhaps a little crowded. There are no porters you can have to carry your own luggage first up the foyer steps to the elevator and then if like us you are give the top floor then another flight of stairs from there as there are no elevators till there. This being done, you walk and walk through narrow corridors to reach your room.
The room is dimly lit and for all accounts it is quite run down and dingy although clean. The bathroom is clean and spacious but again a little run down. A tiny TV runs just one channel and there are of course no tea/coffee ingredients in room but neither were we expecting the same from an establishment of this kind. They did not have free wi fi but had 2 free internet points in the reception which were very useful. The reception area with books and dining table was cosy and gave the feeling of being in someone’s living room rather than a hotel which we really liked. The front desk staff were always polite and smilingly answered our questions, they also reserved us tickets to the Uffizi and Academia with just an email from us before we arrived.
The breakfast however was not even basic, they did not even have toast. Just croissants, 2 cereals and normal coffee, no cappuccino. Given its Italy they may consider investing in a cappuccino machine as I was really not expecting to have a bad coffee in Italy. Even the fresh fruits with 2 or 3 in selection (a bowl of canned chopped fruits was available). They really need to upgrade their breakfast.
The hotel is full of paintings and charming furniture and has a cozy feeling and best part of the stay here is the location. Located really beside the Duomo on a busy street its near Uffizi and the Old Bridge and good restaurants and shops (ask the hotel for recommendations on where to eat, its also full of awful tourist traps). Although Florence is small and really you can walk everywhere, if your trip is short like ours was, it helps to stay somewhere so well located. If you want to avoid street noise you can always ask for a room at the back of the hotel. The bed was okay as were the sheets, the cover was a bit dirty so we just put it aside.
Although there were several major cons we liked Maxim primarily due to its location and courteous staff. You can walk back from a good meal without worrying about getting a taxi and a smiling face at the front desk really does make a difference.
