I spend a few months in Florence every year and it’s a blessing that a modern place like this is opened with food that is fresh, real, and traditional. This is a consolidated review based on the 5 or 6 times I have visited.

The owner, Leonardo, is a young and charismatic Fiorentino who serves up wonderful Tuscany dishes everyday. His mother helps out from time to time. It's definitely a very nice and sweet atmosphere.

There is a great selection of ready cooked meals for take away – Italian meat loaf, roast beef, rack of lamb, roast chicken, etc, with lots of delicious side dishes. For dine-in, the lunch options are delicious and affordable (10 Euros for a primo, secondo, water and coffee). Beware though, this is a meat-centric place as the family is closely tied to the meat trade, but the benefit is that the meat is of excellent quality. I should mention that they also prepare large salads for those who are vegetarians.

So, if you are a meat lover and you like to dine in a modern yet local place that's not catered for tourists, come to this slight off-beaten track of San Frediano and order either a bistecca (if you’re a party of 2 or more) or a tagliata di manzo. There are also two good seafood restaurants - "Il Guscio" and "Burro e Acciughe" - that's down the block (separate reviews) which is not far from this place.

One of my favorite item in Le Volte is the porchetta. The pork they select comes from an organic farm in Tuscany, and since they roast them in house - they’re roasted to perfection. Crunchy skin with the right amount of saltiness and herbs infused in the meat. The drawback is they only make them once a month or every 2 months. So I’d strongly recommend to getting them when they’re available.

San Frediano is still a charming neighborhood in Florence, without overly "contaminated" by the influx of tourists. Everyone sort of knows each other in this neighborhood and most shops are family-run. If you want a modern atmosphere and high food quality, or you simply want a change of scene from the likes of "Trattoria Sabatino", come here for the 10 Euro set lunch or take something to go. Of course, splurge on the “bistecca” or “taliagata” when you can.

As this is a tightly-guarded neighborhood, please also try to respect the charm and authenticity of this area. Please remember, traditional Florence bread are unsalted, there will be no butter for the bread, the real al-dente pasta is on the chewier side, the steak served is not aged (dry or wet) the same way as in the U.S, and there will definitely be no steak sauce for the steak. If you only want to eat what you’re accustomed to, you don’t need to come to Florence for that.

What an amazing little restaurant! Leonardo is an amazing host serving traditional Tuscan food (all family recipes)!

If you are in Firenze head here! It's off the main tourist route but we'll worth the hike
