Our three-week visit to Tuscany was fantastic, but my husband and I agree that our stay at La Colonica’s cottage was the most perfect part of the trip and a great value for the cost.
The beautifully decorated cottage was an excellent base for our explorations of the hill towns of Tuscany. The provided itinerary helped a lot, as well as, the GPS that David loaned us for finding our way back “home’. And “home” is what the cottage became to us when we returned after every fun-filled, but tiring day. We had everything that we could possibly need in the cottage: fast Wi-Fi, cooking equipment, comfortable beds, soft, plush robes, etc. Anna, the very helpful housekeeper, kept us well supplied with linens and even hung our laundry that we had forgotten in the washer one morning. We always enjoyed being greeted by the friendly dogs Rocco and Flint, and they loved the bones from our leftover dinners.
One of the best parts of our stay was the help that David and Cesare gave us any time day or night. David offered great advice about restaurants and interesting sites to visit. Cesare made reservations for our dinners and museum visits. We especially enjoyed delicious meals at Il Goccino, Vecchia Rota, La Dardano and Lo Steccheto. David was great about keeping us informed of any sagras or festivals in the area. The Chestnut Festival (at Caprese Michelanglo), the Pumpkin Festival (Foiana della Chiana) and the Mushroom/Chestnut sagre (Vivo D’Orcia) were some of the highlights of our stay. The Palio Del Boscaiolo (lumberjack competition) in Vivo D’orcia made us feel right at home among the locals. David seemed genuinely delighted to hear about all of our ventures.
Our last day at La Colonica was sad but also very special. We had been watching the olives being harvesting from La Colonica’s grove, so David took us to the mill to watch their olives being cold pressed into oil. We learned so much and were humbled by the gift of a can of oil that we took back to the States with us to enjoy this winter. David and Cesare’s generosity was so greatly appreciated during our stay, from the welcoming bottle of wine, the freshly hulled walnuts, the Vin Santo and biscotti, as well as, their sincere kindness.
As we left La Colonica and headed to the airport in Rome, we felt as though we were leaving new friends behind. It would be great if we could return one day and continue our explorations of Tuscany....an amazing place to visit and La Colonica…the perfect place to stay!
