“Nice Hotel, Convenient to Tourist Sites”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 November 2010

The San Giorgio is a hotel (not a B&B/Inn as described by Tripadvisor), located equidistant from San Marco, Accademia, and Rialto. It is in a convenient location (and close to the Grand Canal and vaporetto stop) for touring Venice. It is located as part of the Palazzo Fortuny, and had old furnishings. The breakfast is extensive and good, and I did get pretty good prices for a midweek November stay.

The problem I had was mosquitoes in my room. I wouldn't expect mosquitoes in a hotel room when it is 5 degrees C outside and raining, but I was bitten by the mosquitoes extensively (I ended up killing four of them), but had a difficult time sleeping because I was so worried about getting bit!

The san giorgio is one (if not the) cheapest hotels in this part of venice. Great value as it is 10 minutes from st marks square and 5 minutes from a vaporeta stop.. We found the hotel staff very helpful and friendly and the breakfasts of excellent quality, plentiful and served in a clean dining room. the room itself had controllable air conditioning and was clean and spacious.
The negatives were that it looked a little tired and in need of a facelift. Some peeling wallpaper..etc
the bathroom did smell and could have done with some refurbishment. (grotty shower edges, rusty tap, the door handle fell off at one point.). but as i stated in the title. It is what it is.. a cheap hotel in the heart of venice
we slept well so i guess the beds were comfortable and the room had a fridge and a safe.
if you want a good base to explore venice with friendly staff and a full belly at breakfast then this will do fine. If the finishing touches to a room put you off and you want a bit more luxury and finesse then prepare to pay more.
The little bar near the hotel called "teamo" is fabulous and very good value. the italians come here and it can get quite busy but they are friendly and a drink is usually accompanied by free home made crisps or some other little nibble.( in the evening at any rate)

The room was small and had a funy smell to it, bit like mold, we thought it was just how it is in Venice tho, seeing as all the water etc. The bed was ok, was two sinlges pushed together tho. Breakfast was the highlight, it was really good, huge range, and a lot of sweets, very nice!!! The juices were good too!!!

My son and I have just returned from Venice...a city I know well. Having been droppedoff in a nearby calle the hotel was difficult to locate as the sign is above eye level and horizontally written...beware if arriving at night as half the writng is unilluminated. The weather was hot and humid and finally on arrival to be told by a smug receptionist that he had seen us pass three times was especially annoying. Having checked in the receptionist... astrapping young male watched as I struggled up two flights with my suitcase. Not what I call friendly service..

The rooms are poky and the decor tired...the bathrooms desperately in need of a refurbishment.

The breakfast served by an unsmiling grudgring waitress put paid to any positive comments I would ever make.
location only good thing. why should service and goodwill be exchanged for a central location. A BIG THUMBS DOWN

My husband and I stayed at San Giorgio 2 weeks ago for 4 nights. It was the worst part of our stay in Venice. After sleeping in our room the first night I woke up to bed bug bites. I wasn't actually sure that was what the bites were until I visited a pharmacist who stated, "I think something is in bed with you." Also the room, on the 3rd floor, all the way to end of hallway, had very poor ventilation, with a very old poor running AC unit. We had to shower every night before bed just to cool off enough to sleep. We brought the issue up to the man at the front desk who agreed that our room was hot, but that the AC was old, and shrugged his shoulders at us. Venice was beautiful, and the worst part of our time there was our experiences at this hotel. I couldn't wait to leave San Giorgio!!! In fairness, this hotel did have a free breakfast that was good by European standards. The room wasn't dirty, just had bugs! Bed bugs in my opinion, automatic fail! And as for the value, you couldn't pay me to get those nasty bugs again!!!
