“Ticks most but not all of the boxes”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 April 2012 via mobile

We are just back from a week at the Petit Palais. We were a party of 6, 4 first time skiers and 2 non skiers). The resort itself was great for newbies. The hotel was well paced about 50 yards from the main gondola. Ok there was a bit of a walk back up from the village to the hotel, but I'd prefer that than having to walk back and fore to the gondola station from a hotel in the village. We were on an all inclusive package which represented good value for money, particularly when the free bar was taken into account.

As for the food itself, the breakfast was ok (just) but the cooked range was a little limited and small. The packed lunch was monotonous and the baguettes something of a challenge but certainly saved money on buying lunches out. The evening menu was the best with 3 choices for each of the 3 courses. Most of the choices involved British food and that was probably just as well as the ones highlighted as the Italian options were very poor.

The hotel was clean, the bedrooms fine and the bath a welcome addition. For some reason the rooms were incredibly hot even with the radiator switched off and the window left open all night!

The boot room was well fitted with 2 sets of boot warmers for each room and plenty of ski racks.

All in all a great hotel for a first ski trip and I would go back there again.

Arrived in Cervinia, and had to walk to hotel, thankfully not a long way, but fairly steep!
Check in was efficient despite the coach load of people who arrived at the same time, and we were given our all inclusive wrist band. Welcome meeting gave all the information we could want, although some of it did seem a bit conflicting, best to clarify with reps if you are unsure. We had some problems with Crystal regarding the package booked (apparently ski + lift pass package does not include boots – and therefore we had to pay extra). We didn’t join in with any of the extra activities offered. It is a bit out of the centre, but there isn’t much to Cervinia anyway! The proximity to the lift was excellent for avoiding the worst of the queues.

As other people have said, the all-inclusive is what really makes this hotel. The bar is free from half 4 until half 10, perfect for the afternoon tea and cakes and then a beer to relax (tip, get there early if the hotel is busy to get a comfy leather sofa with a great view of the Matterhorn). Lots of spirits are included, although we were surprised cider was not! Three choices per starter, main and dessert, although veggie options were a bit bland on one or two nights. I did notice people eating chips though, so it seems the staff will do their best to help! Hot breakfast can be served, but you order it from the staff, it changes daily, rather than being a buffet. The packed lunch got a bit boring, but it filled you up and there was a good choice of sandwich fillings. Chef night off once a week and 4 course meal on the last night. On the night off we ate at a pizza place recommended by the staff. Called Linos it is next to the ice rink and does genuinely fantastic pizzas for very reasonable prices. There were a few security concerns for the skis and boots as they were not locked up (there was a code to get in the bootroom, but we found the door open several times, so anyone could just walk in). Also, it was a bit of a tight squeeze to fit all the skis, boots and boards in when the hotel was full!

They do have a sauna and jacuzzi at the hotel, but I didn’t use it due to forgetting swimwear, take it and give it a try! Would have been lovely after a long day on the slopes, as unfortunately, our room did not have a bath, only a shower (not good after skiing)! We did, however, make great use of the pool table (free) and table football (50 cents). The rooms were a bit bland and bare, but we only used them to sleep in! There was a hole in the bathroom door and it did not lock properly.

I would probably choose to stay in Zermatt if I went back to the area (pay for the extension, it is stunning, and only 30€ per person extra for a day or 60€ for the week). However, this was a great base from which to improve skiing and boarding and the staff were friendly and helpful and made so much difference!

Room Tip: pay extra for the mountain view, and book a bath!

This is an excellent concept from Crystal. It provides good food, packed lunch & free bar from 4.30-10.30. Food at Breakfast & Evening meal was good & wholesome & plenty of it. The pack lunches save quite a bit of money & don't hinder your day if your mile hungry. The bar is perfect, open for when you get in from the slopes & it's all branded stuff & they don't skimp on the measures.

Cervinia town is fairly bland. I've seen better ski towns, but I've also seen a lot worse.

The slopes are very good & varied. If you cover a lot of miles, I would definitely pay the extra for the extention to Zermatt - as it is nearly twice as big. The link was closed on one day due to high winds, but we skied parts of the Zermatt area on the 5 other days.

If you like fine dining or extensive spa treatments or 4*/5* luxury then this may not be the hotel for you. If you have come on a skiing holiday to ski & just want good quality food/drink/bed then this may be just the place.

I would definitely trying this concept again with Crystal.

The hotel itself is a great. There was 4 of us and both rooms were Mountain View which was great overlooking the plan maison gondola (less than 1 minute walk). The hotel is clean and has a Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room all free of charge, these need to be booked as only 6 people allowed at only 1 time but was easy enough to get a space on the day.

The food was brilliant and couldn’t fault it!!! One member of our group is the fussiest eater and they catered for him everything even if it wasn't on the menu! the menu was 3 course and a choice of 3 dishes for each course!

Drinks were All Inclusive from 4.30-10.30pm, all BRANDED spirits too!

The resort itself is really nice, only 5 minute walk away! Fairly cheap to eat out on chefs night off or lunch if you don’t want packed lunch everyday, Linos bar 10euros for a large fresh pizza!!

Ski hire shop is less than a minute from hotel!! Lots of shops in the day are closed as they have siesta up until about 3pm! Crystal guests also get discount card for loads of restaurants in the resort!!

I had ski school for 5 mornings for 2.5hours and (10am-12.30pm) – the instructors are great, so patient and English was good!

We all had the local pass and didn’t feel any need to upgrade to area pass as plenty of skiing even though 1 member of our group was really advanced.

Also, there is the longest ski run in Europe (so I’m told) 22km RED run!

Overall I had a great time and would defo go back...

Room Tip: Room Tip: Get a mountain view room, defo worth paying a little extra!

Just back 18th March 2012 having stayed at petit palais. The rooms are small and a bit old fashioned but clean with lovely towels, also a bath was a bonus,a great value holiday..Hotel run by Crystal staff who are a great team and always happy to please..Franki the rep was a real treasure as was Louise, the manageress.Bar staff also deserve a mention especially Gillian from Glasgow(outskirts)Well done to all.The Wednesday evening to mountain restaurant was great value for money ,food excellent.Menu,at times, was basic but plenty of it and after all this is not 5* hotel or 5* prices..All inclusive bar starts at 4.30pm but a pint at bar prior to this only cost 3.50 which is cheap compared to resort.Would return here.
