With only 20 seats, we were lucky to get a reservation for four.
The interior is sober, modern and agreeable.
All to concentrate on the food. And it is exceptional, either a la carte or the menu.
Before even starting we were pampered with small, delicious pre-appetizers meant to show the mastery of the Chef's cuisine.
Two points are worth noting:
* the service is exceptional in the pure French tradition (example, plates would not be removed until all guests have finished their plate)
* the wines are excellent and mark up is more than reasonable
Considering the price we paid in other restaurants in Orta San Guilio, Locanda di Orta is very accessible and offers fantastic value.
Fantastic experience.

Here at Locanda di Orta we re-discover high professionalism and great hospitality once again. It is a very cozy charming restaurant nicely decored with some local artist pieces with soft music and gentle light. The whole menu was very intresting and so we decided to let chef Fabrizio surprise us. Unfortunately I didn't write down all the ingredients of every single dish but what I can tell you is that they all are very complex and perfectly balanced. They send us with a beautiful local bread basket some little aperitif apps like crispy cod , salmon and sour cream and sea food puree.
After that we received all the other dishes here in the pictures and at the end the best pork dish I ever taste so far! Very soft and juicy wit this crispy skin that make it very gnammy like my daughter will say. All those beautiful dishes were paired with an amazing selection from Sara the sommelier. This red wine I taste it was unbelivably young and balanced for those 17 years of age. At the end we had an amazing dinner with one of the best service and hospitality we ever experienced!
Thank you again to the whole staff and will be back!

In an area where great food is the average, Locanda di Orta offers a more sophisticated experience with its excellent and original combination of flavours and textures.

The somelier is exceptional. We let her pick the wines for each course which made us discover new Italian wines.

Overall the Locanda is an exploration for the palate and is excellent value for a memorable experience.

The amuses were VERY good, following courses were not all of them that convincing. Some superb others just above average. The special tiramisu for dessert was one of, if not the best dessert i've ever had.... chocolats with the coffee were also very good. The prosecco we had was an excellent choice of the sommelier.
Over all it was very good , for a reasonable price. Considering the Michelin star.

We are always excited to eat at Michelin-starred restaurants. We made a reservation here for the next day at the bistro on the roof, which is also nice...usually we have to wait a while for a reservation far in the future.

The whole evening started off strangely, which in some ways overshadowed the entire meal. We arrived 10 min early, thinking we could perhaps have a glass of wine and enjoy the view before dinner. The receptionist was somewhere between brusque and rude. She said "You are very early, come back in a while." I didn't even have a chance to ask about the possibility of a glass of wine in the bar. So we left and went to Al Boeuc (right behind the restaurant) for a glass of wine. While we sat there, we debated just not going back and eating elsewhere. Ultimately, we decided to return.

The food was delicious. Excellent preparation, presentation, and flavour. They even made a simple (yet delicious) butter pasta dish for our son. Pictures of the meal are included in the review. For €45, the set 'Meat' menu was a very good deal, in my opinion.

The other negative was the service. They were very attentive and on-time for everything, but it was brusque and grumpy. I don't know if they were trying to be ultra-serious, but it came across as unfriendly. They made it feel like we should be grateful that we are allowed to eat in their restaurant. Whatever the case or reason, they need to lighten up.

Come for the food...just don't expect a warm reception.
