We were in Orta San Giulio for a week and got to sample a lot of the restaurants. This was better than the Michelin-starred place we went.

This menu is innovative and well executed. We had a 3 course meal for our last evening in Orta and were not disappointed. The restaurant’s wine list has some half bottles, and the waiter’s advice on matching food and wine worked well. Wait staff excellent.
A delightful evening in the setting sun in the square. Our best meal in Orta.

Excellent food and wine, especially my osso bucco! We were seated a few minutes before a large tour group filled 2 large tables, and our service was still prompt and attentive. Lovely view of the Lake and the sunset from our outdoor table. Definitely recommend this place!

We usually drive to Lago d'Orta in the mornings for coffee because, if the weather's good, the place is generally crammed with tourists by lunchtime. This time we were later arriving and after our walk along the lakeside it was twelve o'clock so we took a chance on getting a table without a booking. We were lucky and got the last shady unreserved table; during the meal a number of people had to be turned away because it was completely full.

Despite the fact that it looks like a tourist trap, the food was surprisingly good and most attractively presented. As a starter I took the tartare of 'ricciola' which is a kind of kingfish; there was quite a lot of it for a first course but the fish was nicely seasoned and it smelled and tasted fresh. My partner's first course, the raw vegetables with oriental vinaigrette, was also not your run-of-the-mill salad selection but included fennel and radicchio; the dip was delicious. The main course of lamb cutlets (requested 'rosato') was tender and nicely pink as we'd asked. After that we managed to squeeze in a tiramisu, which can often be too sweet but in this case was very impressive. The whole lot was washed down with a rosé from the Austrian/Italian border.

Service was professional and, considering the place was absolutely full, fairly prompt - in any case, it's not really the kind of place you'd pop in to for a hurried snack. After all that wine, the walk back up the hill to the car park was a bit heavy, but we had an enjoyable lunch. Not cheap (around 110 euros for two, I think) but, in my opinion, worth the money. I'd recommend it for a leisurely meal, especially with the fantastic view of the island to look at between mouthfuls.
