I did arrive at Milano Centrale station with the .italo hi-speed train. The terminal hall with all its train tracks is huge and very lively. Despite its a busy area, the vibe here is pleasent. To go outside, you need to pass through two other enormous and architecturaly impressive halls. This is one of the greatest railway stations I have ever seen. Even if you do not need to travel by train, a must see when you're in Milan.

We used Milan Centrale FS as our portal to explore other Italian cities and this rail terminal is brilliant.

Train tickets can be booked online up to 3 months in advance via the trainline.eu website or obtained from this terminal to almost anywhere in Italy so it’s a great base from which to visit places. There’s even a special train laid on from here to the Italian GP circuit at Monza.

Travellers to the Grand Prix can buy an open return ticket for the Trenord train at Centrale FS (5 euro) that takes you to the Biassono-Lesmo station. Tickets can be purchased in advance of Sunday’s race. Note that return trains drop passengers off at Porta Garibaldi station and not Centrale FS so be sure to check on connecting services for onward travel elsewhere. Special trains run from early morning, every half an hour. We travelled on the 8 am train and this was already busy.

The station is easy to reach on foot or using the underground network as it has its own Metro station linked to the green and yellow lines (M2 & M3). Ticket machines in the metro station can be used in different languages and offer a wide range of tickets from single journeys to day travel cards or even a handy evening travel card valid from 8 pm onwards for unlimited travel on tubes or trams (3 euro). (Handy to know if you are arriving at Centrale and need onward journeys to other parts of Milan).

Digital information boards are everywhere listing all departures by train type (treno) to correspond with your ticket. Platforms have their own individual numbered info displays and many have overhead screens displaying the carriage number to enable passengers to quickly locate their carriage and seats.

Trains depart very promptly so arrive at the station in good time for your train.

Like all modern trains, seats come with gadget charging facilities (not USB) of the 2 pin variety. Bear this in mind if travelling with an iphone or ipad that might need recharging as your standard USB lead is unlikely to be of use. There are no ‘quiet’ carriages and believe me when I say that Italians are gold medal chatterboxes on their phones. A handy pack of ear plugs is a must if you want a snooze on the train.

Travellers do need to be wary though as the station is a magnet for pickpockets and other suspicious characters. Ladies especially note – the guy giving you the eye is not likely to be checking out your vital statistics but is more interested in your jewellery or handbag to see whether or not it’s worth pinching. Look around you at all times to see who is stood close by and keep a tight hold on your valuables.

Also be careful of ‘helpful’ locals offering assistance with either your baggage or to purchase tickets. Most of these ‘good Samaritans’ are often beggars in disguise who expect a donation in return for their aid. We had a couple of helpful types squabbling over who was going to ‘help’ us in a Metro station and it got a bit awkward.

Plenty of bars, bistros and shops on site to keep you fed and watered whilst you're waiting.

I love this train station is one of my favour buildings in Milan the architecture is fantastic, is big, spacious, with a shopping centre and lots of restaurants and bars to eat, the have a lot of security and of course National and international connections.

Always when I take a train from this station is nice and easy... is well connected with busses and underground.

The station has a bus stop outside for those ones coming by bus from Milano Malpensa, Orio Bergamo and Milano Linate airports
