I have stayed in many hotels over the years but cannot recall a hotel experience as special as this one. We all loved this place and had to come back a week later to have a perfect ending to our holiday. The magnificent 180 degree lake view, the fantastic food, the great staff and the charm of the historic hotel is simply a perfect cocktail. Go there!!

We chose this Hotel after reading the Tour Operators reviews, we expected a 4 star Hotel steeped in history offering a level of service from a bygone era. Unfortunately the reality was not as we expected, yes the Hotel has plenty of charm from the early 20th century but that was it. All of the following criticism is down to two factors, the lack of staff and the end of season close down.

We were left by our tour rep and we introduced ourselves to Paulo who gave us our room key, a possible quick introduction to the Hotel and its facilities would have been an advantage. We made our way to our room which was a Lake View with Balcony double, the view from the balcony was exceptional, unfortunately the balcony and the furniture was very small and tired, not a place to relax with a crossword or take in the view.Time to freshen up , no linen in the bathroom rang reception no answer and tracked down a lady who seemed to be the house keeper. linen supplied of very poor quality and well used including torn hand towels.

We headed for the Dining Room and were met with around 100 people who were on a coach tour, the noise and flashing cameras was unbearable. There were three members of staff to facilitate this volume pf people, we were not met to show us to our table and located it ourselves, eventually Bruno a very nice waiter introduced himself and took our order, there were two other waitresses they never introduced themselves and the Head Waitress I found very rude. The food took a long time to arrive and was of poor quality for a 4 star Hotel.Desert took so long long we left before it arrived. We retired to the bar and although the Hotel was packed the bar area was empty, possibly because it was dark and uninviting, we went to our room.

Bed was comfortable and had a good night sleep, disappointed with the TV as it was tuned to a channel for visually impaired people and had this constant voice over very irritable and could not get access to WiFi.Reported the two faults to reception, never repaired for the duration of our stay. Breakfast Cold buffet had been decimated by earlier guests, food every where including the floor, no sign of Hot Buffet found the kitchen and requested Bacon and Eggs, told only scrambled eggs and bacon had all gone, this was 8 45 am and happened three more mornings A very nice lady called Allisia served us with our tea and scrambled eggs, she was the only person to serve 100 plus people, ridiculous really.

Time to visit the town we were told a short walk to town, the first five minutes was frightening down a very busy road with little or no pavement a trip not be be done at night as it would be suicidal. The town was small with good transport links to other parts of the Lake.Returned to Hotel early afternoon for time around pool only to be told by a fellow guest not to bother as it was not in a a good state, we gave it a miss and took a cab to Streesa and a late lunch

Back in our room we had a good look around and were disappointed with the cleanliness, although carpet had been vacuumed they did not do under furniture and we found something that resembled a decaying sweet or piece of fruit, not nice to see.Generally the Hotel was old and had charm, however the general house keeping and decoration left a lot to be desired, holes in carpets and stained curtains. We spoke to our travel rep on two occasions and a promise of discussing our concerns with the management and an update on the outcome never materialised. If we had booked this Hotel as independent travellers we would have booked out after day one.

Generally it is an old Hotel with a certain charm and may have been seen differently during July or August, however they seemed to be getting ready to close for the season and had taken their eye of the ball with service levels and staff numbers, however I paid for the same service levels as guests earlier in the year, It was dis appointing that you were forced to retire for bed very early as there was nothing to keep you in the bar area and the position from town walking on a dangerous road was a non starter

Would I return again earlier in the year the answer is No, I only expect what was is written on the tin and the Hotel fell far short. Generally the staff worked hard but there were not many of them. I chose this Hotel on a Tour Operators recommendation after reading their reviews, they also let me down.

Room Tip: only a lake view room advised to take in fantastic view

We stayed here the first week of September, and previous reviews were true to their word! The hotel is old, a little tired in places, but so lovely. It has an Italian elegance that is just wonderful! The reception area and lounge are full of history and items of the past - Winston Churchill and Queen Victoria memorabilia, which are very interesting to read,
We had a lake view (a must!), and we were on the corner, so had the best views all round! Everything was clean and comfortable.
Paulo, Roberto and Bruno (and the waitresses) were all so efficient and very friendly. Nothing was too much trouble, even when they were very busy.
The four course evening meal was excellent, every evening. It was very well balanced, and very enjoyable. All home cooked too. Breakfast was good too - cereals, ham, cheese, fruit etc and scrambled egg and bacon! Delicious. All served whilst you are looking over the beautiful lake. What could be better? It was also nice to have pre (and after!!) dinner drinks sitting on the terrace, just watching the sunset.
The swimming pool area was down some steps in the gardens. Very nice, sunbeds always available. Take your own towels.
We liked Baveno, which was a short walk from the hotel. Ferries to Stresa and the islands were frequent and easy to do.
A lovely, elegant and grandoise hotel, with super staff. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Lake view definitely

We have just returned from a week's holiday at the Lido Palace Hotel in Baveno on Lake Maggiore. What a fabulous place. We had a friendly and helpful check in and were also shown around the hotel. We had a window seat in the restaurant for all of our meals which had amazing views across the lake. The meals with absolutely fabulous with a great selection at every meal. All the staff were so friendly and welcoming.

We would love to return again if we get the opportunity.
Thanks to Roberto, Paulo and all the staff for a fabulous holiday.

Room Tip: ask for a lake view with a balcony
