Despite the positive reviews, we found the Hotel Centrale to be less like the glowing reviews and more like one of those retirement homes that scrapes by without enough money. Yes, perhaps it is like a hotel from a bygone era, but that era more closely resembles the Soviet one than the Grand Tour. Ok, so where to start? The positives about the hotel are that it’s centrally located and the hotel staff can be periodically friendly. Since Bellagio is a small town, basically all the hotels are centrally located, so that should be noted. We were given a small room for three with bunkbeds overlooking another property. The room was clean in the main areas, but you didn’t have to look hard to recognize that corners and furniture surfaces were ignored. The furniture itself was in poor condition, including the mattresses. The room was dimly lit, but it did have a small tv with a screen the size of a laptop. We were further disappointed the next morning at breakfast, where we didn’t take more than a spoonful of the few items available because the quantity/quality was so meager. The bathroom was mostly clean, but there was definitely a mold problem around the shower that painting over wasn’t addressing. On our second night, we received a call after midnight alerting us to the fact that our bathroom fan was running and asking if we could turn it off so there would be “less noise”. We did so and instantly remembered why we left it on as the other background noise instantly became more apparent. We were left to surmise that while fan noise is a problem, people coughing, using the restroom, being sick, talking, watching tv and someone at the front desk or on the stairs outside our room entertaining a guest for half the night are not issues at all. To make sure that we were not guilty of our transgression again, the hotel disconnected the wiring on our bathroom fan, as evidenced by the dust and insulation all over the bathroom floor the next day when we returned to our room and the bare wires hanging from the unit above the shower. We added the fan to the list of room amenities that didn’t work (safe, window lock, hair dryer, etc.) and decided to push on elsewhere instead of finishing our last night at the hotel, despite realizing that the days reserved were paid in full. We told the front desk that we’d be checking out the next morning, to which we got the typical response of “sure, yes, ok”. The next morning, we left the hotel at 8. Despite the sound of 3 people leaving their room with luggage (a little noisier than a fan) and despite hearing the staff talking to each other around the corner, no one came out to the front desk and so we left our key there. I was surprised a day later at the airport to receive an e-mail saying that our credit card wasn’t valid and that we had skipped out without paying or giving notice. That same credit card worked everywhere else we went and no attempt was made by the hotel to call our mobile number tied to the reservation. I immediately sent them a message stating I’d send them credit information as soon as I was near a computer. It took reminding them to charge me (same card number) three times before I received an e-mail saying they'd get it done. A poor ending to a poor stay at a hotel that looks like it's stopped trying.

Room tip: Don't run your bathroom fan at night, but all other noise is acceptable!

We just left this gorgeous family run hotel which has been in the same family since the 1800’s, the rooms, decorations throughout the hotel have so much love put into them. I’m sure some of the furniture is their family heirlooms, it’s just gorgeous. The beds were very comfortable and we had a balcony in our room with french doors opening onto it, it was lovely to be able to open it when we came back to the room in the afternoon or first thing in the morning.

The breakfast is very generous, cereals, yoghurts, eggs and bacon, cold meats and cheese, cherry tomatoes, olives etc. The bread, rolls and pastries were divine.

The staff were lovely especially the man at breakfast each morning, he was so friendly and happy each morning.

If you are going to stay in Bellagio, stay at Hotel Centrale, it is just lovely and centrally located halfway up one of the little laneways.

This was our second visit in successive years to this hotel and we will definitely be back. From initial booking through to our departure we were looked after fabulously by Michele. The owners pride themselves on this being a family hotel and it shows. Brilliant location And comfortable rooms with an excellent breakfast. We look forward to our next visit.

We booked hoping this hotel would be a boutique type similar to others we stayed in and we were 100% pleased. It’s family run by Michele, Marcello and their parents. It gave us the feel of what a B&B would be like with the feel of a larger hotel. The rooms are appointed well with balconies (fortunate to have one) or large windows, fully air conditioned rooms and a relaxing comfortable environment when you return from a busy day touring the area. Close to the ports for travel and many fine restaurants. They provide breakfast in the morning. Which hits the spot before heading out and serve excellent espresso.

We will definitely stay here in the future when we come back to Bellagio

Michele, grazie mille per tutto, siamo state contento.

Having visited Bellagio several years ago we were delighted to revisit this town on the shore of Lake Como . Hotel Centrale seemed perfect , small, family owned , in the centre of town, easy access from ferry. It was no surprise to find an elegant hotel, traditionally furnished , comfortable rooms with an outdoor courtyard to read and a roof top terrace with peeps off the lake. The staff were very friendly and helpful and even carried our bags to the ferry.
