“Grand value, great room Sept 2012”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 September 2012

Our last night in Italy my friend and I stayed here. Location is great - right across the square from the train station, Principia, where you can also get the Volo Bus (and cabs) to the airport. Staff at reception were gracious and friendly, the room was very comfortable, and the hotel restaurant well above average. The rooftop terrace was closed. Breakfast for 6Euro was out of this world: omelettes made to order, fresh fruits and pastries, an unending supply of good coffee, and more.

I changed my original reservation with Booking.Com (highly recommended) and upgraded at a slightly higher cost, albeit a reduced rate. I was not disappointed!

Location - I was slightly sceptical about this due to previous reviews, which quite rightly point out a presence of certain unsavoury characters who tend to lurk around the area near to the Genoa Principe train station, as well as in the old town. However, this in no way impacts on the location which is in fact extremely pleasant, with a statue of Christopher Columbo adorning the area outside the train station, across from the hotel. Also the distance to the main Piazza De Ferrari is not as far as expected and was a pleasant walk, no matter which route I decided to take.

The Old Town - a maze of alleyways and narrow streets containing various shops from designer to souvenir, as well as many restaurants/eateries etc; Also, despite the presence of certain 'dodgy looking' ethnic minorities, which seem to have settled in the city, during the day, I felt no threat, though still kept my cross-body bag to the front.

The Porto Antico (Port Area) - a wonderful sight to behold with all sorts of things to see and do. There is the large Aquarium which I avoided due to ticket office queues and further along is the large Galleon ship, used in the Roman Polanski film 'The Pirate', which at a charge allows visitors on board. Also judging from photographs, I would liken the views along the port area to those of Vancouver and for a working port, is very impressive indeed. There is the overhead flyover which runs the length of the sea front, which surprisingly does not hinder access in anyway due to its overhead positioning.

The Main Shopping Area - the Via Settembre, an historic stretch of brick archways containing many designer shops and high street outlets. At the entrance to this area lies the Piazza De Ferrari with its beautiful fountains. Genoa contains endless museums and phenominal structures which become evident as one progresses through the cities streets and piazzas. Also nearby is the house where Christopher Columbo lived before embarking on his travels and which is situated near to the gateway of the Porta Soprano.

Worth a Visit - I bought a 48-hour 'hop on/hop off' ticket for the City Tour Bus, at a cost of 15 euros, which as well as being good value, enabled me easy access to various areas. An added convenience is, the bus stops outside the Principe Station, opposite the hotel. From one of the tour stops, I walked approximately two miles to the nearby fishing village of Boccadasse, a distance which can be covered by the scheduled buses if preferred. Despite being smaller than expected, the walk along the sea front is pleasant and worth a venture on a nice day. Also recommended is the Genoa coastal suburb of Nervi, just a 15 minute train ride from the Principe station, at a cost of 3 euros return. Anyone who likes to swim - the waters here are very clear and accessible by rocky bathing platforms, allowing a picturesque view of the Ligurian coastline. Beyond this, slightly further south, lies the famous 'Cinque Terre', easily accessible from Genoa, though I am saving this for my next trip!

The Hotel - I was allocated a double room situated within the inner section, however was pleasantly surprised on arrival. Despite being a solo traveller, my room had a double bed which was extremely comfortable (not two singles joined together) complete with well stocked mini-bar, tea/coffee making facilities and beautiful bathroom containing every possible bathing necessity and more besides. The decor was tastefully presented in typical Grand Hotel style however maintained a modern feel. On the wall behind the bed was a mural of the port of Genoa in bygone days which added to the theme. The maid service was excellent and the room was quiet, apart from an occasional rumbling, which I suspect was the trains passing by. I did however only notice this when I returned to my room later in the day - night time was extremely peaceful. Also from the seventh floor, you can stand and gaze at the city of Genoa in all its splendour!

Breakfast can only be described as 'a feast', with every possible dietary need, including the option of fried/scrambled eggs/omelettes (cooked on request), bacon, sausages, tomatoes, potato rostis - absolutely gorgeous and well presented. In addition there was various breads, milks, fresh/dried fruits, cereals, yoghurts, cooked meats, salmon, cheeses, pastries, cakes ,fruit juices, teas coffees - the list is endless! Also the Tratoria Tralalero, which serves both the Savoia and Continental hotels is a must to try. The food and staff are exceptional and each day there is a set menu for 20 euros, which includes three courses, mineral water and coffee; on Wednesdays, a quarter of wine is also included in the price, so proved good value for money, to the point I dined there every night of my stay. There are however other restaurants within close proximity if required.

Overall Opinion - I highly recommend The Grand Hotel Savoia, to anyone looking for good quality, service and easy accessibility to the train station. I personally feel the location is as good as any in Genoa, a city I would equal to its more publicised neighbours of Venice and Rome. Also as a longstanding traveller within this wonderful country, I would recommend it as a good base to stay when visiting this particular region. I booked through Booking.Com, whom I find are very good, due to the easy cancellation facility should you decide to upgrade/cancel at any point after booking - many have no cancellation charges up to approximately 72 hours before the start of your holiday, though always check this when booking.

Room Tip: I would imagine the sea view, top floor rooms, will have fantastic views of Genoa, though may be cos...

We were really impressed with this hotel. We thought it was excellent value for money. The room was charming and clean (we went one up from the basic room) and this meant we had free access to the spa. The roof top terrace was really nice for an evening cocktail and for breakfast. Staff were very helpful.

The Grand Savoia Hotel was a bait of a disappointment, they advertise spa facilities but what they don't tell you is that you to use the spa, you must pay an additional 25euros per person for the pleasure. When I went for my massage, it was not a relaxing experience, it took place in what appeared to be an disused room, with harsh lighting, it was cold and no blanket or towel! Loud music was playing throughout and there were constant interruptions, people chatting outside the door, doors slamming etc, not what you would describe as a relaxing.
The room was just ok, nothing special and the reception staff I found to be a bit on the abrupt nd rude side.
I wouldn't go back.
