My wife and I stayed at the Villa Steno in October 2010. Matteo and Carla must be the nicest, hardest working couple in the Cinque Terra. Their hotel is at the top of a hill in Monterosso and is quite a climb if you walk up from town, but you can also take a taxi. Either way, once you're there, the views and the breezes are well worth the effort. The rooms are generous-sized and most have balconies. Breakfast became our favorite time of the day. Fresh eggs, juices and lots of other buffet choices. Like other past guests, we reached out to them after the floods there because we felt such a strong attachment to them, to the hotel, and to Monterosso itself. We are glad to hear they will be reopening at the end of March. You could not do better.

My friend and I stayed here in August 2010. The rooms were a good size, with balconies offering very nice views. The hotel was well looked after and clean. A decent breakfast and staff were very helpful with my friend who was having issues with her blackberry and accessing bank accounts.

My husband I and stayed at Hotel Villa Steno two years ago and enjoyed our stay immensely. Matteo and Carla, the owners/innkeepers welcomed us with such warmth and hospitality that after learning about the floods I contacted them to see how they were doing. We have been trading correspondence and most recently learned that as of March 30th they will be open for the season. The Hotel sustained no damage, but was unable to remain open because of street repairs and the clean up efforts. They expect to be ready for your visit and I am sure will welcome you as they did us. Our room had a lovely balcony with a view of the town and to the sea -- great for sipping limoncello in the evening while reviewing the day's adventures.

We stayed in August 2011 for 2 nights on a road trip across Italy. Unfortunately they only had a single room available at the time of booking (it was peak season), although they were able to add a single bed. Not great since we were a couple, but then again we were glad to find a room. We were attracted to the hotel because of its ranking in TripAdvisor and because there was on-site parking available.

The room (and hotel) were very clean. The decor wasn't modern, but more homely. Whilst our room was small, it did have a large terrase. The hotel is located towards the top of town, however, this isn't too bad as Monterosso is relatively small so there's not too many steps to conquer. If you're driving, access is relatively easy - just off the main gates to the city. They have space for a number of cars on site, which was great.

The service in the hotel was very good - we found them very helpful in recommending restaurants. Breakfast was good, and there are great views.

The price in peak season was high, although this is true of any hotel in Europe... so manage your expectations if you are traveling from outside.

I haven't stayed in any other hotels around Cinque Terre, so it's hard to say how it compares to other hotels in the area... I would say though that some of the other ones we walked past didn't look too inviting though, so we were very happy to stay at Villa Steno. Recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms with a balcony are nice

We stayed at Hotel Villa Steno in mid Oct 2011 - a week before the tragic floods.
The Hotel was wonderful with clean rooms, gorgeous views and friendly helpful staff. The breakfast was fresh with good coffee and internet access strength was pretty good.

We took the advise of other travellers and paid for a taxi to and from the train station with our bags. The rest of the time we walked everywhere. The hotel has access to the main town via stairs which makes it a short distance to restaurants, beach and the beginning of the walking trail.

We would recommend this Hotel to people looking to stay in the area. I imagine that given its elevation it was not damaged in the floods but I have not been able to read anything to confirm this - I hope that is the case and that people will continue to visit the area to help family run businesses to rebuild.
