Great location but horrible hotel

Review of Hotel Maryelen
2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 8 Aug 2019via mobile
My partner and I stayed here for 2 nights and it was in a great location. 5 minute walk if that to the train station and within half an hour walk to all other main attractions. However the service at the reception was horrible and it was difficult to communicate as they didn’t speak good English at all. When we booked we were under the impression that we were getting a double bed, however it was just 2 singles pushed together. Not very ideal for a couple who love to cuddle. Also we only got one pillow each and they were very flat and hurt our necks. The walls could of been made out of paper as you could hear everything going on outside of your room. Slamming doors, people talking etc... we didn’t have much sleep at all. The air conditioner didn’t work and we asked reception about this multiple times and they were no help saying that they would fix it in the morning and to just use the fan. It was so hot, in the middle of summer. Don’t even bother getting the breakfast, it was absolutely shocking and made my nose turn at the smell. So to some it up the only thing good about this hotel was the location.

Its not a luxury hotel but more of a backpacking place. However for the price we couldn't fault it -right in the centre of rome breakfast will fill you up for the day, clean nice friendly and helpful staff. Had no hot water first day but it was sorted by staff. Overall we really enjoyed for the price. Rooms cleaned everyday and nice pizza place next door.

Husband and I stayed here during our stay in Rome. Cheap, delicious breakfast and great location. Very close to train station! Would stay again in a heartbeat! The proximity to shops and main attractions can't be beat. For the price you pay, you definitely get the most bang for your buck!!

Cheap hotel with cheap everything to go with it. Very good central location. Room had a balcony 5 stories up. Breakfast was buffet in attached bar, of croissant cheese and ham. Room was small with two single beds pushed together. Very uncomfortable, no air conditioning and bathroom was small , very small, 3 by 4 feet if lucky. If t had a good bed it would be a good cheap friendly location . But ours was not.

Room tip: Ask for a solid double ..not two pushed together

We stayed at the MaryElen for a total of 7 days in June 2018. I had stayed there previously in 2010 had good memories. Location is excellent for taking trains and buses in Rome and arriving/departing to other Italy locations. Area right adjacent to Termini station is a bit "rough" - but street where hotel is located is fine. Hotel itself is very secure. Breakfast was fine. There are a number of sidewalk restaurants nearby that are nice and reasonably priced. Hotel did not want to accept credit card for payment -(they specifically request cash) - so be prepared for that. Overall - a good location if you are not looking for something luxurious.

We arrived at midnight, we were tired and wanted to take a shower and go to bed, but there was no hot water in our room. The manager tried to look surprised, but I figured they know about this problem in the room and were playing for time - we were staying for 2 nights. He promised to have it fixed in the morning, but then he started playing for time again, and it was only after I said we were moving out without paying, that they found an empty room for us which had hot water. The male manager pretended to be friendly but he was insincere, in fact he did nothing to solve our problems, he kept saying we should wait some more. If I hadn't insisted, we would have gone without shower for 2 days.

In the first room, WiFi didnt work either. The breakfasts are very poor and the only thing that tasted good was cappuccino.

The bed and pillows were so uncomfortable I woke up with neck pain.

The hair dryer in the second room was ancient.

And they only accept cash as payment.

Recommendation: avoid this place. A week later we stayed in another hotel for the same price but it was heaven and earth.
