My husband and I and 20 yr old son visited end of day (5-7). The audio guides stopped being handed out around 5:530 so we just walked. Waste of time.

We hired a tour guide and returned 2 days later. Transformative. The history is so impressive. Even if you think you ‘don’t like’ history, you actually will

PArt of our tour of the Colosseum/ Palatine Hill tour. This place is quite mind biggling as you see many layers of history a bit like the layers of an onion.
Yes there are crowds and yes it can get hot so a bottle of water is highly recommended. You will also cover a fair number of steps during your visit.
Hard to say which part was a favourite as there are so many to choose from. You could visit here in a quick whizz or spend all day!

Visiting these thousands year old ruins was a highlight of our trip. It's just amazing that these ruins have survived so many years. I feel like every stone had a story to tell.
