Owner description: Located in the heart of Rome, this vibrant and elegant square is surrounded by 18th-century buildings augmented by the colorful flowers that adorn the Spanish Steps. The elegant steps by Francesco de Sanctis (1723-1726) consist of twelve flights of varying width, which descend to the scenic Franciscan Church of Trinita dei Monti.

The Spanish Steps were closed for renovation when we came to Rome a couple of years ago, so we were determined to experience them properly this time. A 10 minute walk from our hotel brought us to the top of the steps. They were quite busy, but not excessively so. Great view from the bottom looking up towards the church. Came back later in the day with some panini for lunch and sat in the spring sunshine people watching. Nice experience.

The Spanish steps, set in the piazza de Spagna is well worth a visit. Make your way to the very top of the steps for a beautiful view of the streets of Roma.

there is not a lot apart from the fountain steps and a few shops but when you are there the atmosphere is electric the amount of people sitting on the steps taking pictures or eating ice cream gives a great buzz . if you go to the top of the steps and look down it looks a lot higher and it has great views
this is one not to miss

During daytime, we couldn’t even see the steps cause of all people sitting there. However, went back late almost midnight, and it was great. Be sure to climb to the top and get a nice view.

My husband and I visited the steps the Monday after Easter and I am convinced that half of the population of Rome was there at that very moment. There were so many people sitting on the steps that you could not actually see the steps, lol. I would rate the Spanish Steps as one of the sights you should plan to do a brief visit of just to see the architecture, but unless you love shoulder to shoulder crowds, you will not want to stay long. There is great high-end shopping nearby if that is of interest to you. The Spagna Metro stop is very convenient to the steps and can save you time and a little walking if you are staying in an area not convenient to the steps.
