“Amazing views, great family run hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2012

Stayed at the Girasole from 6th to 13th May while attending a wedding in Sorrento. We had booked an upper floor room with a view and our room (50) had the most amazing view right across to vesuvius. We couldn;t have asked for a lovelier room or better view. The hotel is extremely clean with a lovely pool and orange and lemon trees growing in the garden area. The hotel is family run and is really well looked after and the staff will go out of their way to help with anything you need.

The location is a bit out of the main part of sorrento so a walk taking around 15 mins was required into the main square and all of the bars/restaurants, however we paid much less than it would have cost for a hotel right in town so were pleased despite the walk.

The continental breakfast was a bit repetitive for a weeks stay and we would have loved some variety, perhaps a hot option on the occasional morning, however the fresh orange juice served was lovely.

Would definitely recommend the hotel. I would advise to ask for a garden view or seaview room as the road facing rooms were a little noisy for some of our friends who stayed in those.

Room Tip: Ask for the upper floor seaview rooms. Room 50 where we stayed is the one advertised in the brochure...

We stayed at this hotel for a week at Easter 2012 - the staff were friendly and helpful and happy to provide advice about travel, easter parades and events, restaurants, atm access and travelling to Rome. We stayed as a family of three and had a room that easily accommodated a double bed and single bed. The balcony overlooked orange and lemon trees and we had a great view of Vesuvius across Naples Bay. There was parking for our hire car and access was via a security controlled gate. It was around a 10 minute walk in either direction to good food outlets and around a 15 minute walk to the Piazza in the centre of Sorrento. We had breakfast each morning at the hotel and an evening meal was also on offer. There is also a bar and large lounge on the ground floor by the restaurant which looks out to the orange and lemon trees. In the summer people probably sit out under the trees, but it was a bit too cold at Easter! The shower was on a mixer tap in the bath - it was great, very powerful and with a good temperature range.

Room Tip: This hotel is next to a busy road, try to get a room facing the garden rather than the road. We wer...

we were greeted by rita like freinds returning home from a year away as home is like this hotel felt.
Rita and her family gave us a warm greeting every time we appeared and it was as if we felt part of her family.
We had the same room as we had last year and as ever it was a beautiful room with a beautifal view over the bay of napels with vesuvio looming above naples. the view was over the orange and lemon trees in the garden wow! is all i can say
we had a lovley size room with ample space and the staff opened the little safe thats in the room to enable us to use it.
the decor was simple and we had ample space to hang clothing.
the bathroom was small but adequate for our needs the tiles in the bathroom were beutiful .
the shower gave ample hot water and the jet spray was great but as with all showers we have encountered in italian hotels you need to be careful to tuck the shower curtian just so as there tends to be a bit of a leak onto the tiled floor but we eventually got the hang if it.

we had ample towels which were changed as we indicated by leaving them in the shower when we went out of a day
the weather was very wet the 10 days we were here . but the lemon and orange trees and the smiles of rita and the cheery waves from her staff made up for the weather.
our room had a tv and a telephone we were warm enough and had brilliant quality sleep. we did ask for extra pillows and these were promptly delivered.

we had a second floor room with a small balcony there was a small table and 2 chairs to sit out but the weather was not that kind to us this stay

breakfast was 7 till 10am and was lovley the range of foods rols yoghurts ham and cheese and the lovley cakes which we understood ritas sister made and they were lovley the fruit zest they contained coming from the fruit trees in ritas garden at back of the hotel.
most mornings we had lovley coffee from jugs that ritas staff cheerfully poured for us as and when we wanted them there was a jug of hot milk also . my husband loved the coffee particulary form the jugs he liked his black whilst i had the tiniest bit of coffee with nearly all milk and it was wonderful

on the 2 days that we didnt have jug coffee available i stuck to tea cos the coffee from the machine whlist was lovley also i found it was all bubbles and not much drink so a cup could be downed in a few gulps leaving an lot of bubbles and froth

the orange juice was like liquid sunshine and was made from ritas oranges

ritas staff each day prepared for us a picnic which we were given in a small paper bag at breakfast time we had so many picnics in so many lovley places even in the rain!!!(between heavy showers)

snacks were available at various times of the day when the bar was also open.

downstairs its very lovley in the dining area with a view over the garden and i never tired of seeing the lemon and orange trees

there was a large screen tv in the lounge area just off the dining area just right for watching the chinese grand prix and even though it was in the same room as the breakfast area the sound was never imposing you couldnt hear the tv from where you sat

at breakfast time there was the low volume background music of gentle tunes like o sole mio

and other like tunes and it was at an extemely low volume so as not to impose on conversation but again lovley as it added atmosphere particulalry when the heavens were opening with rain!!

the reception area was lovley the hotel throughout was immaculately clean
as i have said and cant say enough the staff are what made this hotel particulalry great and we were greeted by name which made us feel valued and special

there was a locvley swimming pool on site which we didnt use as it was too early in season but the setting looked lovley with seating around it and i understand they serve bar snacks at poolside when its open

the reception area has a noticeboard with lots of information available we did look at the citalia and tompson info books as well
the hotel itself is situated on the main street the corso italia it is a buisy street but if the room is out over the garden at the back we didnt find the traffic noise a problem. the hotel is about a 20 min brisk walk from centre of sorrento the hotel is on the border with next neighbouring town of st agnello. this town was lovley the locals so happy and smiled at you made you feel welcome within there community

we went into local post office for some stamps and a little lady realised we didnt know we had to get a ticket to queue so she pointed the machine and helped us select the right for the post italian(stamp counter) what kindness!!!!

the local supermarket which is in st agnello in the street immediatley to the right hand side of municipo buildning it was the sma store and had a good selection of all produce the street on its left side has the circumvesuviana rail staion for st agnello stop.. the trian tickets get a bit of understanding but we managed it and the train ticket office staff are very honest in that we were sold tickets for what we needed. for example we were there on easter monday and we went to herculaneum we asked for a ticket for there and back and i was given 2 tickets so we used them

when we came back i did check at herculaneum ticket office to say was the ticket s we had ok to return and they said yes we could use it for a further 24 hours as it was a weekend ticket
my point here being was that they could have sold me another ticket i didnt need as i didnt know the system

every time we went anywhere we were greeted with smiles and politeness.
herculaneum is well worth going to as its smaller and well preserved i would say more interesting than pompeii because of it

we didnt go up vesuvius this time as the weather no good going if its in cloud as you dont see much but i will warn you as we arrived and was just coming out of pompeii scvi staion they were directing us to get pompeii tickets upstairs above the railstation ;they were folk wearing sweatshirts with a big yellow i on it which we may mistake for i for information
as we had been before we ignored them and went to the ticket office at the pompei entance

also these folk when we came back tried to flog us an excursion up mount vesuvious on one of there what looked like on the photo of an army of road vehicle it was 20 euros

well the rail station ticket office does the tickets for 10 euros on unico compania which is the locla bus service its 10 euros and will take you to entrance to ticket office to vesuvio national park you do need to buy an entance ticket on arrival i think it will be 6.50 euro but with local bus you get on and off and have as long as you like up the volcano as you catch the next bus back

they give you a shedule so you know

the last 1 km is an uphill ,walk and please wear sensible shoes as the path is covered with loose marbles of larva very slippery particulalry on the way down!!! last time i went up the volcano last year i caught 2 poeple who were on way down and about to fall so i was able to quickly grab them one of which was a lady carrying a child so the way down in particular need caution.

by the way i am a lady so when i say i grabbed them i dont mean in any perverse way

we went on a trip to paestrum and this was lovley the only downside with organised trips is that you have to go at there shedule and time scale and we would have liked more time there and more time to look at museum

paestrum is difficult to get to from sorento on public transport

we made our way to pompeii and herculaneum on the circumvesuviana we also went to see the villa oplonits and we saw 2 villas at castallamare di stabbea arainne and villa marco
if you are going on foot i would urge you to look the route up on the net

basically we got off train at catallamare de stabbea went out of staion to the main road outside staion you turn right onot via margharita at top of this road you come to a junction you tun right you past a big laser qwest biulding on your left. crooss over to this side of road that laser biulding is on

keep going up that road you go up there untill you almost come to the motorway slip road before it on your left is a sharpe hairpin bend this is via archeologica the road that the 2 villas are off of

keep walking up this road keep on left side there is no foot path

you keep walking and i would estimate its about 1km along this road to the left is the first villa ariane its down a small gravel road on your left

villa st marco to get to that come out of gravel road from villa ariane turn left back onto via archeologica you walk along it and its quite a way down this road its on the left again down a gravel road

you got 2 options to return one is back along way you came
the other is to turn left back onto via archeologica and go along this road till you meet a main junction turn left and carry on this road dont take any turns off it
keep walking you come up into a town keep walking and it will lead you to the circumvesuviana staion of nocera which is next stop up from castellamare di stabbia you cant miss the staion as the track crosses this road you will see the barriers in the air

coming back to the hotel garisole on our arrival rita`s family had left an anniversary card in our room as this was our holiday to cellebrate 25 years there was also a lovley bunch of flowers in the room this was a lovley surprise and was a lovley touch so kind

on our early departure we would miss breakfast and without even saying anything rita had realised we would miss breakfast and she arranged a packed breakfast for us
cheeze and ham rolls a delicous slice each of her sisters cake which had zest in form the citrus fruit and apples and oranges we enjoyed these as we flew over italy on the plane

we definatley recommend this hotel to anyone!!!!!

Room Tip: a room with view over garden on second floor

We stayed as family of 4 at the Girasole over Easter this year. We booked a family room which was very generous on size and added to the pleasure of our stay. What beautiful views from the balcony! the lemon and orange trees are just below in the garden and the views to Vesuvius across the sea. The owners are so warm and friendly and arranged a takeaway pizza for us on our first nights stay, what a lovely thing to do for a family on first arrival. Would not hesitate to book again. Thank you so much, we had a lovely stay.

Great hotel. we stayed bed and breakfast and the food was great; even my picky kids enjoyed it.
On the main road but you wouldn't know. About a 15 minutes walk to piazza tasso but the traffic can be quite entertaining :-)
