Date of Visit end Sept 2011.
Sometimes it’s good to sit back and wait a while before giving a considered review of recent destinations, and Sorrento and the Grand Hotel Royal fit firmly in this category.
Unlike some hotels the Grand Royal has retained its class and character from a by-gone age when travel was a reserve for the lucky few and where staff training is still clearly high on the list when it comes to providing service, whether arranging a trip out at the front desk or ordering a bottle of bubbly by the pool, and this style continues to the rest of the hotel where the rooms (that we saw) are of a good size and decorated to a high standard with marble bathrooms, wood inlayed furniture and ample wardrobe space.
We stayed in a full sea view room (317) on a half board basis and spent our days alternating between trips out and lounging by the pool and after 10 days still had not seen all that this lovely area had to offer, returning some evenings to enjoy a cocktail before dinner then drinks with fellow guests in the open air lounge and which on one or two nights turned into a bit of early morning finish. The main lounge adjacent to the open air area had live music on some evenings which was of a high quality and could be seen and enjoyed by all.
The food served was plentiful and of a good standard as were the room service meals we treated ourselves to. However, the local restaurants offer equally excellent menus and it is worth considering visiting them as an alternative to half board.
Sorrento itself is well known for its picturesque setting, it is well worth visiting the local cathedral just for the ceiling art alone and the formal shops are of a high quality and include several designer boutiques as well as local produce and gifts. In fact the clothes’ shopping was so good we had to buy an extra suitcase to carry home our new selections.
There are plenty of small bistros to sit in and enjoy a coffee (or bottle of Rosé) and watch the locals go about their business and in the evenings, especially at the weekends, it is worth picking out a good seat in the town square and enjoy watching the stylish younger generation promenading around enjoying themselves with no hint of trouble or disruption sadly often seen in the UK towns.
In short this hotel and destination will stay with you for many years and I’m sure you will not be disappointed with either.
We have just booked another trip to the Grand Hotel Royal for Sept this year and are very much looking forward to further exploring this beautiful region of Italy. And more shopping…
