I was very fortunate to tour the Sassi area with Antonio. The positive reviews on trip advisor are fully justified. As a Matera native, he sees the area and its changes as personal story, not just providing a tour for tourists.

Antonio talks of exploring the Sassi area as a child. In those days the homes that are now be renovated were abandoned and likely dangerous. Antonio has watched the town change from its lowest point to one of rebirth. And with it, the rise in tourism which hopefully will be supportive and not overwhelming.

This is an town with a history of thousands of years. Yet, Antonio is able to provide an overview that clarifies its growth, decline, and the current advances. He also is fascinated by the logistics that make the town function. The supply of water to the cisterns, the channeling of rainwater through the courtyards, and inter-building of one house atop another.

It is a rare pleasure to hear Antonio describe the town with the passion of a native. I hope he continues to enthrall visitors with his knowledge.

Thank simulation

Again on tour, this town is like walking in medieval times. We are told that the people many thousand years ago lived in caves in the cliff face and this is evident. Somewhere along the line they progressed to the town, but the housed were small and usually one floor above ground and 1-4 floors below ground. This is the old Matera, there is a newer Matera as well. Must see place.

However the churches again are beautiful. Make sure you get panoramic views of Matera as it is magical to see.

We went into a dwelling and saw first hand how the inhabitants used to live. In just a couple of rooms they stored everything and lived in this.
One dwelling we saw there were a family of nine with a pet dog with a donkey and all lived underground. Sleeping, cooking and stores. WOW

Matera is a city on a rocky outcrop in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy. It includes the Sassi area, a complex of cave dwellings carved into the mountainside. Not to be missed!

We booked a tour in English with Antonio the night before our arrival in Matera and were happy that he was able to accommodate our request. The tour was the first thing we did as part of our visit to Matera and we are so happy to have booked it! Antonio was very knowledgeable - not only did he provide fascinating information about the history of Matera - he was also able to answer all our questions. Antonio could jump from the details of the frescoes in the cave churches to stories about the people in the Sassi. Highly recommended tour!
