I was very fortunate to tour the Sassi area with Antonio. The positive reviews on trip advisor are fully justified. As a Matera native, he sees the area and its changes as personal story, not just providing a tour for tourists.
Antonio talks of exploring the Sassi area as a child. In those days the homes that are now be renovated were abandoned and likely dangerous. Antonio has watched the town change from its lowest point to one of rebirth. And with it, the rise in tourism which hopefully will be supportive and not overwhelming.
This is an town with a history of thousands of years. Yet, Antonio is able to provide an overview that clarifies its growth, decline, and the current advances. He also is fascinated by the logistics that make the town function. The supply of water to the cisterns, the channeling of rainwater through the courtyards, and inter-building of one house atop another.
It is a rare pleasure to hear Antonio describe the town with the passion of a native. I hope he continues to enthrall visitors with his knowledge.
