Description: Refugio Restaurante, in the historic quarter of Valencia, is known for its seasonal cooking with high quality ingredients, careful presentation, friendly and informal service and its excellent value for money. All of the dishes are made in-house, including the desserts. The seasonal menu always has a selection of rice, fish and meat dishes and a wide variety of vegetarian options. The ambience is intimate but lively, with two dining rooms. There is a carefully designed wine list and a wide variety of infusions and the restaurant also offers food and wine matching dinners and special menus for groups.

We've really enjoyed the food which was full of taste and extremely well presented. The bottle of wine was well balanced price-quality. Don't look elsewhere for a nice culinair experience but...No maximum score due to:
1. One of the entrees wasn't the one we've ordered (agree language barrier might be the cause)...my wife accepted to take the 'alternate'...but one might expect the establishment to drop the extra cost of a somewhat higher priced 'misunderstanding'
2. Tip: don't just put the bottle of wine on the table but pour some wine in the glas and offer your guests to validate/taste it
3. Ordered explicitly a large (American) coffee...an espresso I received

Anyway, great food but the 'Refugio' should pay attention to details for an even better experience. We certainly come back whenever in town again.
Thank You!

Booked a table for dinner on the early side (9:00 pm) after the opera. By 9:30 every table full so clearly a popular place. Minimalist decor but good acoustics so not overly noisy. Each table could carry on a conversation without being drowned out by other conversations or restaurant noise. My friend had a beer so I ordered a glass of house wine which was good. Service was great. Perfect balance of relaxed , very friendly yet highly competent. Didn’t have staters. The salads delivered to a neighboring table looked wonderful and plates were cleaned so think enjoyed. Our food was innovative. Both sauces were excellent. I had cod over fennel in a citrus sauce. Could have enjoyed an entire bowl of the fennel which was roasted and soaked in the citrusy sauce. Cod was very fresh and steamed (guessing sous vide) to perfectly done. My friend had stufffed lamb which unfortunately was over cooked and quite dry. Accompanying sauce was delicious but couldn’t quite compensate for the over cooked meat. We shared a rhubarb apple crumble. rhubarb impossible to find - mostly just apple crumble. Served cold which surprised as somehow expect crumble to be warm. Nice spice balance in the dessert and accompanying sauce. Restaurant clearly excels in sauces. Think this restaurant appeals to diners looking for something “different” - certainly not a meal or menu designed for a diner seeking typical Spanish comfort food.

Walking around the Barrio del Carmen we spotted an unassuming little restaurant with a sliding door. It was lunchtime and the menu looked ok so we went in. Oh my God! The best meal yet in Valencia. Three choices for each course on the menu, all prepared beautifully and served with panache and a lovely smile. We were so lucky to get a table. It's incredibly popular so very busy. Recommend you book.

We made reservations at Refugio and were almost late because we had a difficult time finding the front door. In the daylight, it's unmissable, but in the evening, we were distracted by a mural across the street with the restaurant name. So, be aware that Refugio is ACROSS from its mural.

Once we were inside, we were immediately seated and offered our choice of English or Spanish menus. The waiter said they were out of the wine we'd asked for and recommended an alternative, which was delicious. We noticed almost every table was drinking the same wine so wondered if perhaps they'd overstocked it, but it was very good so we can't complain.

We shared a few appetizers--sardines on toast and ceviche--which were both fantastic. For our mains, I had a tuna dish prepared with miso and served with black rice. While I thought the dish was a little too salty due to a lot of miso in the sauce, it was also very delicious.

Service was excellent, with our waiter checking in at regular intervals and making sure we had everything we needed. The price ended up being very reasonable as well for the quality of the meal.

I visited this restaurant with 10 work colleagues, 1 of which is vegan and another who is gluten intolerant, and we all LOVED it for the amazing food and the warm friendly reception. This restaurant is truly special and not to be missed. I already look forward to my next visit!!
I visited with a team of designers and they were all wowed by the interior and menu design. Very cool
