“Fantastic location and value for money but most staff don't understand English”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2012

I stayed here for two nights having booked a non refundable room at an excellent rate. Our rate didn't include breakfast and I have no idea how much extra it cost, but those in our group who did have it reported that it was very good.

The rooms themselves were extremely clean and a decent size for such a centrally located hotel. The location is near Sol, which makes it walking distance to most of the big sites and shopping areas. The windows in the room do a great job of blocking out street noise.

The shower was good and there was a large number of complimentary toiletries and towels which were replenished regularly.

One problem we did constantly have was that most staff didn't speak English. This made ordering room service difficult and resulted in us being transferred around to different people in the hotel each time we wanted to phone down, which sometimes resulted in phones ringing out. We also had an issue with an incorrect order being received to the room. This lack of staff with good English was disappointing for a four star hotel in a major city which I expect receives regular custom from English speaking visitors.

On check out, there were a few additional items added to our bill which we did not order (mini bar, bar and room service items which were not ordered), although our bill was corrected and in the end we only paid for what we used so this was not a big issue.

Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel. For a business trip the lack of English speakers in the hotel would potentially make it difficult but for a weekend away as a tourist it is ideal, assuming you do your own research on directions, where to eat and what to do, as the staff, although friendly, are of limited help.

I stayed at the Hotel Liabeny with my husband and 2 other couples. The hotel is lovely, very nice décor, rooms and staff. The hotel is right in the heart of Sol and you can walk to all the main attractions within a couple of minutes. I read reviews about noise at night but none of us noticed any noise whatsoever and ever if we had heard anything it would be worth it for the central location. I can't recommend this hotel enough - Great value for money!

Agree with contributor "gbwjr" that this was a good value and decent hotel in a great location. Compared to the nearby Best Western Carlos V hotel, this one has more space, better shower, nicer lobby, and friendlier staff for the same price range. The hotel is also safe and security is good....even access to the stairs requires a key card. Very easy to find (by walking) from the nearby Sol plaza which also has a metro, bus, and train connection. Yes, the lift is small, but this is Europe after all....
Food shops nearby so no need to spend over 9 Euros on breakfast, but they will sell you a pot of coffee for 2 E which is decent.

This was one of the best of our trip. An older style, one block from Puerta del Sol and it's crowds, but on a guiet street (Calle Salud) opposite a church, and two blocks from Gran Via. Not expensive. Had a very nice room, twins, on the street side but quiet. Nice working bath. TV ok but dont use the internet. A cafe and restaurant are attached. We chose the breakfast buffet because it was so good. Overall service was excellent. Concierge Pedro and other most helpful. Nice comfortable bar and lounge and enjoyed watching some of the Toro activity on TV with the locals.

This hotel is in a very central position and many of the main sights of the city are within walking distance. The hotel has a rather impersonal feel about it, but the staff are helpful if asked and the room we had was a good size and clean and comfortable. The breakfast buffet was well laid out with plenty of choice - hot and cold dishes. Most of the staff do not speak English and the coffee shop did not appear to have a menu which made ordering anything interesting. Good air conditioning meant that windows could be kept closed and we were not disturbed by noise from outside at all.
