I've been here a couple of times over the years. A visitor should include it - striking architecture, lots of tapas bars and "buzz". But the buzz comes with persistent panhandlers, beggars and tacky stands ("take your picture with your head in a Spanish costume" type of thing).

Lots of mid market shopping within a few blocks by Puerto del Sil

Plaza Mayor ( Main Square ) is without a shadow of a doubt one of the most popular tourist destinations in Madrid, its arguably one of the most beautiful plaza's in this most beautiful of city's.
Constructed between 1580 - 1619 during the Habsburg period and during King Philip III reign ,the square looks amazing ,its been beset with three major fires but has subsequently been rebuilt and what we are left with is a stunning square.
The architecture is awesome, the centrepiece of the square is the stunning equestrian statue Filipe III, moved from Casa De Campo in 1848 on the orders of Queen Isabel II to Plaza Mayor.
The square is packed with restaurants and cafes and the streets leading into the plaza are teeming with pubs, bars and restaurants, walking into Plaza Mayor through the beautiful and evocative Arco De Cuchilleros is magical, it's a beautiful plaza ,most definitely well worth checking out if your planning a holiday to Madrid.

It is a big square where all around it is surrounded by beautiful buildings. At night the buildings are illuminated with lights of different colors, it's beautiful.
