“If you want central, this is it”
Reviewed 14 June 2011

If you want a central hotel, right by the cathedral, then this is it.
It is a wonderful little hotel. The people who are on the front desk really couldn't be more friendly or helpful. The rooms are quite adequate - not large, but just fine. Clean, had everything that we wanted.
We opted for the breakfast, which was also good - perhaps a little pricey. But we got fresh fruit salad, a rarity in our 3-week trip, so we appreciated that. Also had the Santiago torte, which was perfect for our celiac family member.
If I were to go to Santiago again, I would opt for a place just outside of this busy city centre - not far away, but there were plenty of other options within a short walk of the city centre.
But if you want the center right at your feet, then stay at this charming, friendly little place. It's worth it.

Room Tip: Try for the upper floors

In April of this year I took a vacation with a couple of family members and we spent 2 weeks travelling through Europe. We stayed in many hotels and hostals throughout the time but none of them made us feel as comfortable and at home as we were in Hotel As Artes!
Owners Carlos and Esther were more hospitable to us than some of our FAMILY that we had visited throughout our trip! We actually rushed back to the hotel after our tour to sit and enjoy a glass of wine with our wonderful hosts.
The breakfast is served in a beautiful stone-walled cafe with windows that open to the busy Santiago streets and a view of the cathedral steeples. Breakfast itself was filling and delicious. Fresh cut fruit salad, endless cafe con leche, ham and cheese, etc.
The rooms are stunning and comfortable. The old feel of the stone walls is exactly what we were looking for in our stay in this old city.
We are SO happy that we booked with As Artes. We do hope to return again soon and I would absolutely recommend this as your first stop when looking for a hotel!
Thank you Carlos and Esther!

We spent one night at the As Artes, and thoroughly enjoyed the stay. It's a boutique hotel which has been decorated with a sense of style and its location couldn't be better - just behind the cathedral, central to everything. All the hotel rooms are named after artists, and we had the Auguste Rodin room, which was charming. It was a good sized double room, well furnished, plus extra touches like supply of dressing gowns, private bathroom with a good hot shower and a hairdryer. Breakfast was continental but substantial and tasty. All staff were exceptionally helpful and courteous. Our sleep was interrupted once by passing revellers, perhaps an occasional drawback of the location.

A wonderful, quaint hotel in such an amazing city. The people at the hotel were very nice and helpful. Our room was very clean and we had a wonderful stay. You cannot beat the location - literally a 20 second walk to the Cathedral, just around the corner. We were very happy with the location. Santiago de Compostela is a fantastic city. The only tip I have is to find parking before trying to find the hotel. There was secure, patrolled parking around the corner, at the university, which was very reasonable at approx 10EUR for a 24 hour period. Compared to what we saw, this was a great find. I would recommend Hotel As Artes.

We stayed here at the end of the pilgrimage, and partly to celebrate our anniversary. Yes, we were used to pilgrim albergues, but also I should mention I'm rather particular when it comes to hotels. :)

Very clean, unique, cozy, simple, beautiful room, staff was very kind and hospitable, friendly. Small, but perfectly adequate for us. We loved the stone walls in our room with little coins balanced all over it (we added one of course), the cozy lobby with the bar, the cookies in our room. Lobby smelled of smoke but our room was pristine, smoke free, and really gorgeous with the view of the cathedral.

We had noise from outside and could hear our neighbors in nearby room coughing at night. But I will say, i spent a long time searching for the quietest hotels for our travels throughout spain and france, and after 1 month of staying at different places, what I learned is this: if you choose central location in an old city like this one, you must accept the possibility of noise (because of proximity to public squares, bars, etc). I think the only way to avoid this is if the hotel is designed with rooms facing a quiet alley or shaft, or if you pay to stay at a large, more recently built 5 star hotel with truly and expensively sound-proofed rooms.

Only suggestions: freshen up the lobby (smelled like smoke, but our room didn't), and start breakfast earlier.

Overall very happy with our stay.
