Stayed there tuesday 17th April and the first thing that struck me was very dark and quiet, Room was lovely, aircom quiet, tv changed languages(free), lights had various settings and extras in bathroom and robes made it executive style, €215 included breakfast, buffet stlye but verything, staff couldnt do enough for you and would stay again. Prices in bar high though otherwise would get 5 rating, check out spa(free) if you go, pool very relaxing, roof top pool bit windy though

We were disappointed in our recent two night stay in the light of many previous glowing reviews. The obvious plus points of the hotel are it's central location and the good, varied buffet breakfast. The downside is the size of the smaller rooms, the decoration and the noise which even soundproofing fails to exclude.
Our first impressions were of a very dark, cavernous and poorly lit entrance hall largely decorated in black. We realised that it was meant to be dramatic but it was deeply depressing. Our room was similarly decorated in shades of dark green/black with little light relief and a small window crammed into a corner. Not only was it miserable but very stuffy but when the window was opened a great wall of "music" erupted from the adjacent building which can only have been 10' opposite our window. It was so claustrophobic and noisy that we asked to be moved to a room with the same kind of decor but with a bigger window. We had to pay €70 but we had no option. The rooms are all reasonably furnished and the bathrooms and rooms are very clean. We had a problem getting any milk for the room tea -- it simply never arrived after it was requested and you are left with one small bottle of water on the first night with no subsequent
replacements. The noise from La Rambla continued until the early hours when it was taken up by some residents screaming in the corridor outside our room.........it would be fair to say that this was not the hotel for us!

We stayed at the Hotel 1898 in April 2012. It was an amazing place to stay. Luxurious and friendly. The staff were professional and helpful. The hotel is very well maintained and a joy to spend time in. We used the spa area everyday and we had the place to ourselves all but one day which was fantastic. Breakfast was the best I've ever experience with an amazing choice of everything you could imagine and it was served right up until 11am which means a leisurely start to the day is possible. The hotel offer a free afternoon tea in the lounge bar between 5pm and 7pm which is a nice social gesture. I'd stay here again if I was in Barcelona and would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: best tip is that the air con is in the cupboard next to the safe.

The first impression when you get into the hotel is a bit of a dark brown mahoney bit of an antique type of hotel, but soon you discover that attractive and a tastefully modern touch can be found everywhere in the hotel from reception lounge area to the library, even the hotels corridors, not always the most attractive place in any hotel. Everywhere you can find large b/w photos on the walls of every space, from restaurant to the spa, library, bar as well as in the corridors of the 7 floors of the hotel. Stayed in a room on the 3rd floor at the front side so facing the Rambla, the busiest street/walkway of Barcelona. That was a mistake, the first night as I heard all sorts of noises that you can imagine, street shouting during the small hours at night, cars, even the metro/underground/train could easily be heard. If you are sensitive for all kind of noises (despite the double glass windows) make sure you stay at the quieter side of the hotel. The reception gently moved me to the 6th floor away from the street. The beds are comfy, the interior of the rooms is rather spacious even in the cheaper room class, nicely colored Japanese red good lighting (can be dimmed, very nice), wooden floors and a modern, comfortable bathroom with full amenities. Internet is free (I like that, still too many hotels making this not a standard part of the room package against sometimes ridiculous prices). Breakfast is rich (good selection).
The hotel has a small but nice indoor swimming pool and a SPA, although booking a massage wasn't easy as they only seemed to have one masseuse).
One thing that could be improved is that there is no in room movie channel (not a big deal if you are an iPad fan with TV shows no your iPad, but still...). The front desk had some good and worthy recommendation for tapas, a must when you are in Spain. All in all: worth the bucks, but make sure you book a quiet room!
