“Lluis Domenech i Montaner's sprawling Hospital”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 May 2012

Of all the great buildings in Barcelona, I would say this is one of my favourites. It lies just up the road from La Sagrada Familia, & is no less monumentally eccentric. Actually it's many buildings - part Gothic cathedral, part Teutonic fortress, part sultan's palace, its roofline is a riot of spires, beehive water towers & gaudily tiled domes, & its flanks are decorated with heraldic symbols & heroic-scale frescoes of the hospital's benefactors. Since June 2009, the ambulances have pulled up in front of a new hospital that's been tacked on at the back, & the majestic old buildings are slowly being transformed into a museum & cultural centre. I highly recommend stopping by the hospital. It's about a block from the Hospital de Sant Pau metro stop.

“Amazing Hospital”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 May 2012

This is an amazing collection of buildings that Barcelona is doing it's best to preserve and update in order to keep them alive and in use. There is extensive renovation going on so do take the 'hard hat' tour to see the inner workings of the site. You'll get to access the underground tunnel system and wander around in ways that the non-paying tourists will never see. (Some tours are conducted in English - see the schedule for details.)

It's hard to believe the site has been there for so long given the imaginative thought process that went into it's construction. The innovations that were put in place at the time are really wonderful. Focusing not just on the physical health - but also the mental well being of their patients. Truly ahead of it's time.

At the end of the tour you'll be invited to have a look at the language center and walk around the site. Don't take a miss on that. When you enter the language building you'll be greeted with some of the most amazing Spanish tile work - in a stairwell! It's really beautiful.

Loved the detailing on the domes. Definetly worth a look if you have time.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2012

It is a huge set of buildings, that use to be an hospitla and now is in renovation. Is one of the most beautiful palces in BArcelona. You can also see(and walk form there to) the sagrada familia, and if to have a drinkyou want go to "la hispano suiza" where you can see some nice old cars.
