Very average, not 5-star

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 July 2021via mobile
We stayed at the Palacio de Santa Ana Hotel for 1 night stopping in Valladolid. We weren’t expecting anything ridiculously grandiose, and from a basic perspective, the hotel had everything we needed more or less and we had a pleasant stay.

But. Whenever I write reviews I like to address all the things I noticed that make the hotel anything less than perfect - in this case there are quite a few things I think were below par, especially considering the hotel’s claimed status of a 5-star hotel.

Pros of the hotel

1. Although the English wasn’t the best all the staff were very friendly and the service throughout was very efficient - we were even able to check in and out very quickly via the Marriott app which was convenient and much appreciated considering the pandemic still being rather at large in the area.

2. Cleanliness and maintenance - the hotel looked very clean throughout and was very well kept, including the room - there was little damage to any of the features and that was much appreciated again considering COVID-19.

3. The open courtyard in the middle of the hotel is very appealing and throughout the rest of the hotel the traditional Spanish design was maintained which was a nice feature of the hotel.

4. Breakfast service - there was a very good variety in the buffet with the availability of a hot meal - sometimes in Spain we have found the buffet selection to be a little limited so this was a nice surprise and considering this the price of 14,30 euros was very reasonable.

Cons of the hotel - this list is not exhaustive, but some of the details we noticed were so small they’re not worth mentioning.

1. Beds - the beds unfortunately were not the most comfortable and a duvet was not provided despite the rather cold room temperature. As a result we couldn’t really get a good night’s sleep.

2. Design - for me, having stayed at a great deal of 5-star hotels, the design of the rooms was very standard and unattractive. Whilst they were still fully functional and stocked with most facilities you’d need (bar a safe or minibar), it was just a bit plain and didn’t have the flair or upscale feel that you would expect from a 5-star hotel.

3. Bathroom - the bathroom in the room was again rather unattractive but more importantly had a design flaw - the bath (there was no shower) plug did not stay open when the dial twisted - so if you wanted to drain the bath you would have to hold it open. However the shower was quite good.

4. Location - if you’re looking for somewhere in the heart of Valladolid, this is not the place, as you would have to walk for at least 45 minutes to reach the town centre.

That said we had a pleasant stay and the hotel is very COVID-friendly, but I would think of this place to be more of a 4-star or 3-star hotel as the rooms and general feel of the hotel was very average.

I have been there before during Covid but this time was much better. I really had a great room and the service was very kind, specially the guy doing the mornings at reception, really kind. The room was very clean, spacious and comfortable. Will be back.

Room tip: Go for the deluxe rooms facing the river, they are worth the difference

This not the Marriott we are used to. A bare bone room, stripped from carpet, slippers, robes, glass and an empty minibar. Service at lowest level but a friendly receptionist managed to find a opened bottle of wine for an afternoon glass. Dinner menu very very limited but serving ok. Breakfast chaotic despite preorder and few guests. Staff generally seemed panic stricken by Covid but that might not be the establishments fault but general sentiment in Spain. Parking convenient in basement.

Dear customer,

Thank you for choosing to stay at the AC Hotel Palacio de Santa Ana and providing your honest feedback that are always beneficial for our daily improvement.

Providing the highest level of hospitality is our number one priority and we sincerely apologize for the incidents in your stay experience, falling short of meeting your expectations.

Because of COVID19, we are gradually adapting our situation from an operational hotel for essential services to the new actual situation. It is a process that we must carry out with care and we feel the inconvenience that this could cause them. Apologize for this situation that is being complicated for everyone.

Therefore, and thanks to your comments, as a teachable moment, we have shared your feedback and we have already hard working with the appropriate hotel team to look responsibilities, to ensure the necessary guidelines are in place and to prevent it doesn’t happen again in the future.

Once again, thank you for your valued feedback and we hope to serve you again whenever your travels bring you back to Valladolid and to apologize personally. Thank you very much for everything.

This is not a bad hotel but it does not deserve 5 stars. It deserves 4 at best. The pillows are worthy of a 3 star hotel, the rooms are not sound proof enough and the amenities are almost non existing, not even a laundry plastic bag... Maybe it's because of the Covid situation but it still costs the usual price, I therefore expect the usual service. The good thing was the people at reception, extremely kind and efficient. The building itself is beautiful and looks 5 stars.

I recently stayed four nights for a business function in Valladolid and found the hotel to be a very pleasant experience.

Rooms are surprisingly large and comfortable (I stayed in Room 11 on the ground floor equipped with two single beds) but are a little spartan with wooden flooring and light coloured walls. Sleep quality was good.

The bathroom is large with bath tub, bidet and double sink but no separate shower. The room had no view to speak of overlooking scrub and lawn.

As if often the case in Spain there are no tea and coffee making facilities in the room but what is sadly lacking and a pre requisite for a hotel claiming to be five star is an in room safe. That has prevented me from awarding a five star rating and I would have expected a safe in a Marriott property. .

The hotel is some way from the historic centre of Valladolid so maybe not ideal for tourists as there is nothing of interest in the vicinity and you need to order a taxi to go to the city. It was, however, ideal for a business trip or conference.

The gym and small indoor swimming pool were open and breakfast was quite nice albeit with no variation on a daily basis. I ate one night in the restaurant which was very good and good value for money.

Staff throughout the stay were charming and spoke enough English for overseas travellers and I would certainly stay again..

Room tip: Rooms overlooking the river have better outlook
