I stayed in this particular hotel around 37 years ago and although we have been back to Puerto de la Cruz since then, its the first time back at this hotel. This was a family holiday, myself, husband and two daughters, aged 16 and 23, we decided to book the Monopol due to its excellent central location and it being a more traditional hotel with character. We booked a basic twin room for the girls which was adequate, it did not have a balcony and over looked an alley way but we did know that when we booked. We opted to pay around £100 more and booked a room with a balcony which was larger and we were lucky enough to be at the front of the hotel with beautiful views over the plaza to Mount Teide in the distance.

We were very happy with our room and although there is no air con, the ceiling fan keeps the room cool enough and it was very airy. We booked on a half board basis - breakfast was very typical of a Spanish hotel with the normal cooked food on offer and various cereals etc and it was fine. The evening meals however were very disappointing, the salads were nice but the cooked food was not good. Every evening there was a type of fish and meat, the meat was very dry and over cooked or raw in the middle - its a shame as we enjoyed every other part of our stay at the hotel but I would not book half board here again.

We loved the hotel, the location is perfect and the lobby with the inner garden area beautiful, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful - the swimming pool is not huge but has lovely views over the sea and the plaza at the front is a lovely place to people watch. Its a very short walk to the sea and prom where there are various restaurants and bars. Eating out in the area is very reasonable, you can get a nice meal for around 8 euros, drinks also a very reasonable price in all the restaurants/bars.

The internet at the hotel is not great, its 14 euros for a week which allows two devices to connect but it is very slow.

We checked out of the hotel yesterday and the manager very kindly allowed us to keep one of our rooms on for a few hours extra as we had a late flight, free of charge which is unusual these days.

We would definitely stay here again and are considering booking for next year.

Room Tip: Its worth paying extra for a room with a balcony, lovely views from the front.

We stayed for a few nights in a room with a balcony facing the little church plaza. We knew this place very well and wanted to have the mountain and city view. But sadly the plaza has become a meeting point for alcoholics and drug traffickers. We saw some very upsetting and disgusting things happening and didn't enjoy the balcony room at all.
The hotel itself has an old charme but needs more attention and modernisation. The bed was very uncomfortable.
Breakfast was ok but very basic.
We would not stay again.

We chose to stay here as not too big and prefer somewhere a bit quieter which it was. The room was ok but very dark and gloomy overlooking a dark alleyway - so if booking pay extra and get a view! If I had a better room I would have given 4*.
Breakfast was a great spread but the hot food was lukewarm - this is such a simple thing to fix just switch the hotplates on much earlier - really puzzled by this? The selection of breads was really good.
Location was excellent, central to the town centre so great for an evening stoll round a few bars and restaurants..
Apart from the barman I don't think any of the staff spoke to us but there were other residents hugging them and it appeared that they stayed there regularly.
Pool area ok but a bit shady late afternoon (on those occasions that there is any sun as cloudy in the north of the island!)
Would I stay there again? Maybe if I had a room with a balcony but mainly because of where it is situated.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the alleyway are dark - upgrade if possible

We stayed here for 5 nights for my birthday. After doing (extensive) research on hotels in the area we decided to stay at Hotel Monopol after reading the reviews.
The hotel is situated in the older part of Puerto and, in my opinion, has one of the best locations of any hotel in the area. Mainly surrounded by pedestrianized roads, the area is very quiet. The entrance hall of the hotel really does have the wow factor with all the tropical plants and it makes a lovely, cool, place to sit. The hotels pool area and bar overlooks a plaza and beyond that is the sea, just beautiful!
The room is much better than we expected for the price we paid, more than big enough with plenty of hanging space in the large wardrobe. There was even a fridge in our room! The bathroom was fine, and the shower is one of the best we have had at a hotel- strong and warm.
We did have to pay for wifi, but once connected it was a good speed, and for the price we paid for the room it really wasn't a problem to pay a little extra for this.
We opted to have both breakfast and dinner at the hotel which worked really well after a busy day of exploring. The restaurant staff were extremely friendly- the chef even gave my fiance tips on how to make his favorite sauce!
the breakfast had everything you could possibly want, tea and coffee, bacon, sausages, 3 types of egg (boiled, scrambled and fried), baked beans, hash browns, porridge, cereal, pastries, bread/toast, yogurt, cheese and cold meat. there was even prosecco on offer on Sunday morning!
We were equally as impressed by the options available for dinner. The food was all nice and hot too. There was always 1 or 2 types of soup to choose from, a huge salad bar and then always at least 1 meat AND 1 fish dish, lost of vegetarian options, and always a type of pasta and a pasta sauce (or lasagna). Then carbs, there were always patatas arugadas which if you have been the the canaries are a favourite dish, and also a rice or another potato option as well as bread. Finally, there was always something breadcrumbed and fried (chicken, fish, squid, prawns) and chips.
For pudding (if you have space), there was a good selection of cakey type things, a good range of fresh fruit and icecream in the freezer.
The staff couldn't be more friendly or helpful. As it was my birthday, we had a bottle of fizzy wine delivered to our room compliments of the hotel.
I would definitely stay here again!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a pool/sea view. The rooms on the other side of the hotel face the church which bongs quite regularly!

We have just had a 10 night stay at this lovely hotel and to be honest we couldn't fault it.You are dropped off on a not too busy road to the right of the hotel and its a 2 minute walk. The reception staff are friendly enough. We had a huge room absolutely spotless. There were a couple of water stains on the toilet and bath but the main thing for us was it was clean. My parents have stayed here before so it was highly recommended. It was our first time to Spain too.The beds were made every day and towels changed if you wanted.
There is wifi and you can get 1/2 free each day or its €14 for the room for a week.
Great choice at breakfast, sasauges, eggs and bacon, fruit, yoghurt pastries toast and cereal.Juice tea and coffee!I didnt tire of this breakfast the whole time I was there. The staff are very friendly in the breakfast room too.It was our wedding anniversary whilst there and my parents organised champagne which the head waiter happily took his time to open and pour for us.
The pool is lovely with towels provided if you wish and we never had a problem finding beds. The added bonus of a hot tub and sauna!Again all spotless.
Pablo who has worked there for a long time and works the bar is great and funny, along with his sidekick who we didn't get to know that well.
They did have their fiesta in the square right opposite our balcony,it was the whole weekend and went on till 5am one morning!!!Very loud but all monitored by police,we did have a moan at reception but just bought some earplugs to keep the noise out!
The hotel has a mix of nationalities which is good.We met a lovely Spanish couple at the sangria meeting where they hand out flowers tho the people who have stayed there the most.
It's in a great location with a great walk either side of the hotel. We watched a wedding at the church opposite which was really nice too. The restaurant right next door does great coffee for €1!!!
I would book this hotel again in a hearbeat.
