“Wonderful modern apartment in old town”
Reviewed 27 November 2016 for a stay in October 2016

Ana is very welcoming and explained how everything worked in apartment...had literature and map of city and gave us places to visit, eat, etc
Apartment was wonderful. In old town, across from cathedral, absolutely great location. Quiet at night bustling during day with locals, tourists and street musicians.
Apartment completely renovated with open format, modern kitchen and bath. Ana paid attention to comfort and details (i.e. kitchen, baths). We enjoyed our stay immensely.
Just know in old part of city and no parking. Parking is easy however, about 1/4 mile away in garage. Might be difficult for older couple not in good physical condition, plus walk up steps to apartment.

“Very Noisy at Night”
Reviewed 20 October 2016 for a stay in September 2016

The apartment is as advertised, clean and contained everything one needs for a short stay. The windows are modern and do help to contain the outside noise. However, we experienced considerable noise until late at night. Two of the five nights we stayed, the noise disturbed our rest into the early mornings. Mostly alcohol fueled yelling and laughter. Then businesses begin to open and delivery trucks arrive at seven AM. It doesn’t help that the apartment looks over onto a square that funnels noise upward. If you drive, the distance from the nearest public parking is at least a 10-15-minute walk while dragging luggage. Our attempt to drive our car into the area early in the morning for loading was rebuffed by a very rude police officer. If you stay, it would be helpful to have written directions for the clothes washer (at times hard to get the door to open) and stovetop (we never got it to operate). We informed Ana that on the first morning of our stay my wife plugged in the hairdryer in the bathroom and the outlet came away from the wall. Because of the interruption with our sleep and inconvenience of location we would not stay here again.

I'm sorry Wylie didn't enjoy their stay. In 3 years time it's the first time someone writes “very noisy” and I can't think of any excuse. Actually because there's nothing we can do. Living in a pedestrian area has its advantages and disavantages and anyone living in a place like that knows what I'm talking about: no need to take the car as everything is reachable on foot, nice to have a walk before getting home, etc. But also street noise and car-restriction rules. If Wylie would have asked us if she could enter the car we would have told her that it was not possible. Cars are only allowed to people working or living here from 8am until 11am (8am, not 7am). And police officers are very serious with this. Imagine if anyone could drive in at any time: that would be a real chaos considering that the old town is full of people, shops and restaurants.

In relation to the apartment's location, Wylie is partly right. We are located in an open air square where you'll see people walking through or drinking a coffee (there's a nice terrace to sit in). The terrace closes at 10pm so the noise you hear at night comes from people walking on the street. And this is something we just can't control. Many guests ask about the noise before booking our house and we always tell the same thing: Bilbao's old town has a vibrant atmosphere during the day but you may hear street noise at night.

About parking options, the one I recommended Wylie is called Parking Arenal and according to Google Maps is 500 metres from the apartment. In my opinion, that's not a long distance. But I do understand that carrying heavy luggage for 5 minutes could be not the best option. To solve this issue we lend our guests our “resident card” in order to get in and not being disturbed by the police.

And last but not least: I would like to talk about our washing machine. It's a brand-new washing machine and dryier but has something that could bother anyone. It's called children safety-lock. That means that it won't open until you hear a little noise. Once you'll hear it you'll need to press “off” and it'll open. If you start the machine and go out you obviously won't be able to hear this little-but very-important noise. If Wylie would have asked I would have explained this.

All in all, I'm happy to be able to respond to Wylie's review as now future guests know a bit more about us and our home. And please do ask when having trouble with anything! It's difficult to help if we don't even know there's a problem.

“Lovely apartment, but ....”
Reviewed 9 October 2016 for a stay in September 2016

Myself and my partner rented Ana’s apartment for a romantic holiday, after having previously had a perfect short break in another apartment in the same building, which is perfectly located in the centre of the old town. As that was not available on the dates we wanted, we booked Ana’s apartment which is equally lovely and well-equipped. However, we did have one or two issues with the way in which Ana managed our stay. She was unable to meet us when we arrived, and sent a substitute who was in a great hurry, and failed to notice that an electrical plug was hanging off the bathroom wall, and, there was a very unpleasant in the bathroom. In fairness to Ana, we did not inform her until the third day of our stay because of our schedule. She did respond by coming with her husband who fixed the problem, although she did arrive after the time we had arranged, and stated that it was a problem that has occurred before. We had little or no further communication from Ana throughout the rest of our stay. We messaged Ana on leaving telling her we would leave the keys on the table in the, and informing her that a blind had fallen from the window narrowly missing my head. It is now more than two weeks since we have returned, and we have not received any acknowlegment of our message.

“Ideal place to experience Bilbao from the inside”
Reviewed 7 September 2016 for a stay in August 2016

Tastefully furnished, good beds to sleep in (also the spare bed in the living room) and very clean apartment in de heart of the old town of Bilbao. We have enjoyed the short evening strolls to Placa Nuovo to eat some pinxtos and the early morning runs to and back from Guggenheim museum. Great little shops and coffee bars on your doorstep.

To be aware of: The laundry machine is handy but peculiar. It has a children lock which is not obvious to open even if you follow the instructions from the kind landlady. Also dropping off you luggage is a thing: the apartment is located in a car free area, and the nearby garage is a 10 minutes walk away. The apartment is on the first floor, but the stairs are wide and not steep. You can pass this by: you can illegally drive up to the apartment through the shopping street before 11.00 in the morning, as also delivery vans drive up the shopping streets in the morning to cater the shops.

“Clean, stylish appartement on the best location in town.”
Reviewed 9 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

Appartement is nicely decorated in a simple nordic fashion. Clean and good beds to sleep in ; also the spare bed in the living room. Only drawback is unloading the luggage. No traffic is allowed in old city. Closest garage is 10 minutes walk. Could consider breaking the law by driving up to the appartments on the walkway before 11.00 am as all suppliers also drive their trucks close to the shops. Bakery and supermarket close by , by foot.
