It's always very busy when the ferries from Norway and Sweden come in, seems that everybody wants to have breakfast or lunch there. They have all sorts of food, soups, vegetarian, meat, fish, you name it. In the warm season the roof terrace is very popular and will quickly be filled up.
A hint if you are staying in Kiel: Late afternoon (after 6pm, I think), they sell some dinner items at half price. You get some meat or fish, and then you can fill up the plate with all the vegetables, potatoes, sauces you can pack onto one plate.
