Thermen am Viehmarkt

What do you think, what may represent interest in abandoned Roman baths for modern man? Properly, virtually nothing. Moreover, in their deplorable condition in which they were the entire time, being in fact a quarry for new construction in the city. But they built a building over it with five "tiers" of glass panels, and everything became completely different. First, it is possible now at least to visit and see the baths. And secondly, the baths became good scenic venue for various city events, including wine festivals. Regretfully, I was in Trier at the wrong time – the old vintage has been already spilled, and the new one didnot even ripe.

We arrived at the ruins of the Roman baths on Viehmarkt (“Thermen am Viehmarkt” in German) after closing time (5 p.m.) but were able to have a good look at the site through the windows of the huge glass case designed by Oswald Mathias Ungers to protect the ruins. If you have seen other Roman baths in Trier or elsewhere, it doesn’t seem worth to pay the 4 euro entrance fee.

Very interesting to see. Ruins are in good enough shape for you to get a feel for the original use of each room. The Roman history is Trier is amazing!

You can project your inner image of the hugeness of the original building on the therms on the glass case. Sewage systems from Roman and medieval times,

Worth a look, but not particularly easy to understand exactly what you're looking at. A site strictly for the history buffs in my view.
