We spend a couple of minutes to see this impressive medieval tower in the heart of Mainz.

You can walk around and realize that the original base level is below the current street level.

Signs explain the reasons why and give further information.

A few minutes after we continued our walk around Mainz...

The tower itself is interesting and maintained nicely. However, when I was there I witnessed a homeless man living underneath of it, with actual furniture, yelling at himself. Other than that, the tower is 1 of 2 (I believe) that still exist from the days of the old wall.

Of course. the tower isn't wooden and never was wooden. It is made of rubble stone. On the contrary, it was tall (6 tier) defensive tower, created in the Gothic style, and had at its base the span for city gates. Just nearby there were lumber yards, from which it got its name. At the time, it even used as a prison, and the most famous prisoner was a local resident nicknamed "Flayer".
Now the tower has no practical application, and just performs the role of an ordinary object of advantageously tourist value.

Part of the original fortifications of the city. There are a couple of these towers still standing from the 15th century built of iron and wood. They are still in use today for municipal offices and meetings. Easily viewed from many parts of the city.

It was an attractive illuminated tower near the Dom. Understand that this wood Tower is a medieval tower. With the Iron Tower and the Alexander Tower one of three remaining towers from the city walls.
